CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. – July 4, 2017 – Team Turner Racing was at full speed for Friday Night Excitement and turned in their best collective performance of the season at Ohsweken Speedway on June 30.
Cory Turner led the way for the team in his KT Tobacco/Silo Wireless No.97 with a fourth-place finish in the main event. However, it was Ryan Turner’s Ace’s Bar and Grill No.91 that was quickest in heat race action where he earned a second-place finish.
“We got a good start and followed Dylan Westbrook into one and two and then kind of followed him through to the front,” Ryan said. The car was good. The crew had it setup really good. We had a bit of a different setup this week and I was happy with the way it was rolling.”
Jamie Turner raced to a third-place result in his heat while Cory drove to a fourth-place finish. Ryan’s strong heat run allowed him to start fourth, Jamie lined up in seventh and Cory was tasked with starting 11th.
Early in the race, Cory made a big move to race forward four spots from 12th to eighth on the opening lap. It was a daring move that paid off for the No.97 group.
“I drove in hard and I just gave ‘er. It seems like the outside rows are getting a way better run on the start,” Cory said. “My dad started seventh and I was already by him down the backstretch.”
Jamie’s start was hindered by a slow inside line. His Charlie Bee Honey No.11 was forced to work the bottom lane early on.
“I was okay early on,” Jamie said. “My car didn’t like the bumps that well tonight and I didn’t make the right adjustments for it. We were just kind of hanging on there at the end. We came home in one piece and we’re looking forward to next week.”
Ryan was strong early in the race and battled inside the top-five most of the race. The first caution on lap eight was not to his benefit though as the car changed dramatically during the yellow flag.
“I took a chunk of mud in the head on lap three and I think that woke me up,” Ryan joked. “Before the first caution my tires started to come alive and heat up a bit. I really started to go ahead and find the groove in the rough stuff. I didn’t want to see that caution. We just slid for second and the caution came out, so we went back a lap. The car just wasn’t the same after the first caution and it got worse after the second caution.”
Cory found some extra speed late in the race. The final caution with 27 laps to go allowed him to gain a final spot and earn his fourth-place finish.
“Twelfth to fourth, I was pretty happy with that,” Cory said. “I thought we had a car capable of a podium and I thought we had the speed to win. I was really happy with the car. It was good at Merrittville and good this week.”
All three drivers were thrown a curveball by a very fast, tacky and bumpy racetrack that was vastly different from the smooth and slick surface they’ve faced most of the season. The change in conditions was due mostly to the large amount of rain that fell in the preceding week.
“It definitely makes it challenging, especially when we get used to the slick track all the time,” Ryan said. “We’re used to the slick track all year long and now we’re challenged with a tacky track.
“The guys can’t control the weather,” Jamie added. “I know they’ll be back on top of it. You just have to be happy when you come out without the top-wing wrecked.”
Team Turner Racing will be back in action on Friday, July 7 to kickoff the month of July with another round of Friday Night Excitement at Ohsweken. For additional event information, visit www.ohswekenspeedway.com.
