CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (June 11, 2019) – The 2019 race season took a while to get underway, but Team Turner Racing is up to full speed through three weeks of competition at Ohsweken Speedway. Last Friday night, Team Turner Racing scored a pair of top-10 finishes, with Cory Turner earning a fifth-place finish while Ryan Turner tallied a sixth-place result. Jamie Turner was 23rd after a challenging night.
The night started with a second-place finish for Cory in heat one before Jamie finished sixth in heat two. Ryan earned a second-place result in the third and final qualifying heat.
“The car was very fast for the heat race, but I should have listen to my crew more on my choice of line,” Ryan said. “The bottom was not the place to be. The crew made minor changes for the feature and gave me the best car I’ve had all season.”
“In the heat race it was crazy slick and I don’t think I got over half throttle the whole time,” Cory explained. “The car was good though. We started third, got to second quickly and was running down Mitch Brown for the lead late in the race.”
In the Feature, Ryan lined-up on the pole while Cory started fifth and Jamie rolled off from 18th. Ryan held the second spot until lap 10 when he slipped to third. Then on a lap 12 restart, Turner fell back to sixth.
“The crew made minor changes for the feature and gave me the best car I’ve had all season,” Ryan said. “It felt like the tires sealed up during the caution and I couldn’t get the forward drive we needed to get by the lapped cars on the restart.”
For Cory, he fell back initially, but found more speed through the middle of race and was as far forward as fourth before settling for fifth.
“We were pretty decent in the Feature,” Cory said. “I was really good in the middle of the race. I was running down the guys in front of me. I got by Mitch Brown, I got by my brother and then Jimmy Huppunen got by me. I got back by him and then he got by me again with two laps to go.”
Jamie Turner couldn’t get comfortable behind the wheel of his Charlie Bee Honey.Mudcat Entertainment Centre No.11 and ended the night with a 23rd-place finish after ending the night early.
“I wasn’t very good this week. I came in once so the guys could make some adjustments and still felt terrible,” Jamie said. “The car is running well mechanically. We’re working on the setup now.”
While it’s been a solid start to the season, all three drivers are eagerly pushing the envelope to improve their cars as they head into the busiest portion of the 2019 season.
“I worked with the boys Monday night and we have some new stuff coming this week, so I think we’ll be better,” Jamie said. “We’re always optimistic.”
“We are always trying to find more speed as a race team,” Ryan said. “I don’t think we are far off. The last two weeks has been all minor changes and we have done the same this week. As a driver I am always trying to better myself. I learned a lot last week after watching myself that I can take forward this year.”
“We’ve made some changes for this week and I think we’re going to be better,” Cory said. We just have to keep working at it. We’re trying to fine tune it. We’re consistently a top-five car, but we also want to consistently be a podium car. We’re there, we just need to be a little better.”
Team Turner Racing will be back in action on Friday, June 14 at Ohsweken Speedway for Wall of Fame night before travelling east to Brighton Speedway for the Southern Ontario Sprints season opener on Saturday, June 15.
