CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (July 3, 2019) – Team Turner Racing had another successful night of 360 Sprint Car racing at Ohsweken Speedway as the team registered three more top-10 finishes to wrap-up the month of June. Cory Turner led the way in his Burger Barn/Ace 1 Construction/Mobil 1-sponsored No.13 with a fourth-place finish. Jamie Turner piloted the Charlie Bee Honey/Mudcat Entertainment Centre.DSE Performance-sponsored No.11 to a seventh-place result and Ryan Turner drove his Kingpin Farms/Burger Barn-sponsored No.91 to an eighth-place result.
Jamie Turner started the night off strong with a drive from seventh to fourth in his heat race to qualify for the feature redraw where he pulled the pole starting spot in the 20-lap Feature. He went on to finish seventh after arguably his strongest run of the season.
“The boys just keep working and the car is getting better,” Jamie said. “I hadn’t started up front in a while, but we led a couple of laps. The track was pretty fast and it was good to get out front in some clean air.”
For Cory Turner, the night started with a bit of a challenge in his heat race as fought the handling on his car before claiming a fourth-place finish from the sixth-starting spot. Despite his drive forward, he did not qualify for the redraw and started 11th for the main event. With the handling issue fixed for the Feature, Turner ended up driving forward from 11th to fourth in just 14 laps, which proved to be the end of a rain-shortened event.
“In the Feature, we had an awesome car,” Cory explained. “I think we had a car capable of a podium. We were running Kreutter down before the last caution. I never got to see how good Jimmy (Huppunen), Mack (DeMan) or Dylan (Westbrook) were since we started a few rows behind them. We definitely had a podium-capable car and if you run on the podium night-in and night-out, you’re going to have good results.”
Ryan Turner had a similar start to the night as Cory, racing forward from sixth to fourth in his heat. That put him 12th in passing points and the two brothers alongside each other in the sixth row of the main event. Ryan had a tougher time getting to the front, but broke into the top-10 late and grabbed an eighth place finish, his sixth-straight top-10 to start the year.
“It was a little dicey for sure,” Ryan said. “We just zigged when we should have zagged. That happens though in racing. I would have liked for it to go the full 20 laps. I think I probably could have got to fifth or sixth. We weren’t terrible, but we weren’t the greatest. I just didn’t hit my marks when I needed to, but we weren’t totally disappointed with it and we can build off it.”
With a successful month of June in the books that saw TTR record more than a handful of top-five and top-10 finishes, including Cory’s pair of victories, the team took a moment to reflect on the first six weeks of action.
“We’ve been happy with our progress,” Cory said. “We’ve had a real good first third of the year with two wins and a lot of top-fives. We just have to keep at it, keep working hard and keep prepping our stuff the way we know we can.”
Ryan echoed the sentiments.
“I’m happy. We have a couple of different setups we can run right now and we haven’t finished out of the top-10,” Ryan said. “We have something that we can continue to build on and go forward.”
Now Team Turner is now looking ahead to a doubleheader weekend to start July. Team Turner Racing will return to action at Ohsweken on Friday, July 5 before heading east to Brighton Speedway on Saturday, July 6 for the third round of action on the 2019 Southern Ontario Sprints tour.
“Brighton’s got a really good surface,” Jamie said excitedly. “They’ve done a really good job with their track, so we’re really looking forward to going there again.”
“The whole crew loves Brighton, so we’re excited,” Ryan said. “I think we’re going to be fast right out of the gate. We’re ready to get going again. We’re currently leading the SOS points, so we’re just looking for a good solid finish, but it would be great to go win one there.”
