CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (June 25, 2019) – Another double header weekend of 360 Sprint Car action saw Team Turner Racing walk away with a collective five top-10 finishes during action at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday and at Merrittville Speedway with the Southern Ontario Sprints on Saturday.
The weekend started with at Ohsweken with Cory Turner driving to a second-place finish in his heat from the sixth starting spot, Ryan Turner finishing fourth from seventh and Jamie Turner piloting his No.11 to a fifth-place result. Both Cory and Ryan qualified for the redraw where Ryan pulled the pole starting spot and Cory lined-up seventh.
A challenging race with a handful of cautions saw Ryan bring home his Kingpin Farms/Burger Barn No.91 with a third-place finish, his first podium result of the season at Ohsweken.
“In the heat race, we had a bar go bad on us, so we actually kind of struggled through it. That made it interesting for a setup in the Feature because we didn’t know exactly what the car was like,” Ryan explained. “We kept it pretty good, it was just a little loose for the late laps in the Feature. The bottom really came in late in the race and I should have kept ripping the lip up on the cushion. When you see guys poke their nose under you, you start searching. Luckily we held on for a third-place finish.”
For Cory, the race started well as he quickly worked his way into a battle for second. However, as the race went on he was hampered by a collapsed nose wing on his Burger Barn/Ace 1 Construction/Mobil 1 No.13 that eventually ended up grinding against the left-front tire. He fell to his eventual 10th-place finishing position.
“I went to the bottom and just drove to get points,” Cory explained. “We had a really fast car and if the front wing would have stayed up, I believe we had a car capable of a podium finish.”
Friday’s race saw Jamie drive the Charlie Bee Honey/Mudcat Entertainment Centre No.11 to a 12th-place finish after starting 17th for the main event.
“With the boys helping me, I think we’re starting to gain on it some. If the driver can catch up to the car, we’ll be all set,” joked Jamie. “I do feel more confident and with the boys doing well, we’re starting to gain a little steam here. The main thing is just to be competitive every night and be in the race.”
On Saturday, all three drivers made the trip to Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ont. which has been a home track for both Ryan and Jamie in their careers.
“I enjoy going back to Merrittville,” Jamie said. “We get to see lots of people that we’ve seen there for a long time.”
All three cars were fast on Saturday night with Ryan and Cory each earning a second-place finish in their heats while Jamie scored a third-place result. Ryan was among the class of the field in the main event, racing forward from fourth to second early in the race. The race ran caution-free and prevented a late-race charge at leader Dylan Westbrook.
“I always like going back to Merrittville from a driver’s stand point and even the crew gets excited because we always seem to have good runs there,” Ryan said. “We were fast out of the gate. We may have tightened up a little too much for the Feature, but the car came on strong late. We were wishing for a caution with two laps to go to see what we had for Westbrook.”
The second-place finish was Ryan’s third-straight podium result.
“It always feels good to get on the podium. We’re getting closer to the top spot,” Ryan said. “It’s a positive. We’re getting there. I’m starting to get really comfortable with the car and the crew is giving me an awesome car each night. We’re getting closer to where we want to be.”
Meanwhile, Cory drove to a ninth-place result after adjusting the car too tight for the main event. Jamie was able to drive forward to a 10th-place result.
“Saturday was my fault,” Cory said. “I just totally dialed us out. We had the third fastest lap in the heat race and I just dialed us out for the Feature.”
“Saturday was a caution-free Feature and I started back far enough that I could have used a couple,” Jamie said. “Ryan did really well, so that was good. The track was good and smooth. It was slick, but it wasn’t anything we wouldn’t expect going there most times.”
Team Turner Racing will return to action on Friday, June 28 at Ohsweken Speedway for Sponsor Night. Race time is 7:30pm, with Hot Laps scheduled for 7:00pm. For additional event information, visit www.OhswekenSpeedway.ca.
