@OhswekenSpdway •OAKLAND, Ont. – June 5, 2016 – The third week of racing at Ohsweken Speedway produced an exciting pair of races for the Insta-Insulation racing team. Thunder Stock driver Karl Sault parked his Great Lakes Brewery/Waterous Holden No.81 to a third-place podium finish.
After a roller-coaster race one week ago, Sault rebounded impressively with a strong battle at the front of the field all race long. Sault ran second for several laps behind leader Jim Lampman.
“I got underneath him and he kept cutting me off. Finally I had enough and just stayed in my lane. He hit me twice, then he lost it out of (turn) two on his own,” Sault said. “I was passed him, but by then (Wyatt)Van Wart and then Jason (Lungaro) passed me.”
Sault fought back at the finish in a drag race to the checkered flag with Lungaro and fell short by less than a nose. Had Sault gotten by Lampman earlier in the race, he felt he had the car to win.
“The top was a little more slippery. I tried high a little earlier in the race, but low was where to go,” Sault said. “I would have been hard to beat on the inside.”
In Crate Sprint Car competition, Brad Herron posted a sixth-place finish in the Miska Trailer Factory/Climatizer Cellulose No.12. After starting third, Herron ran at the front of the pack for the entire 20-lap distance.
“I knew pretty well off the onset of the race we didn’t go quite far enough with some of the adjustments. The forward bite just wasn’t quite there,” Herron said. “I was trying to maintain and go in to defense mode, so I’m not really sure what happened. We’ll have some work in the shop to do some investigating.”
A third straight top-10 finish for Herron continues to indicate the team is headed in the right direction. Nonetheless, like any driver, Herron is continuously searching for ways to go faster.
“It’s by no means disappointing, but when you start third and go back to sixth, it kind of makes you scratch your head. Why couldn’t we at least maintain? Or why did we go backwards?,” Herron asked. “It’s still a solid run. We’ll take that and keep marching forward.”
Meanwhile, Alex Schuts piloted the No.5 Insulthane Extreme Spray Foam/Middleport Mechanical Crate Sprint Car to a 12th-place finish. Another top-10 was taken from his grasp on the final lap when the leaders slowed after taking the checkered flag while he was fighting for position. Nonethless, Schuts added to his notebook once again.
“That was the slickest track I’ve raced on. It was different slick than the rest of them. We had our car setup for a little bit different slick,” Schuts explained. “As the race went on, I got more comfortable and found some grip at certain spots. I was hitting them well.”
While Schuts has an impressive crew and team to support, he is increasingly realizing it is a battle with himself once he’s on the racetrack.
“This whole thing is a game against yourself. It’s like golf and hitting the ball around the course. That track is the course and you’re the golf ball trying to roll around it in the right line,” Schuts explained with a laugh.
The entire Insta-Insulation Motorsports Team returns to action next Friday, June 10 at Ohsweken. All three cars will again be in competition on Rochester Knighthawks Hot Rod night. Race time is 7:30pm.
