CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. – June 6, 2017 – Team Turner Racing was back in action with all three cars at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night where Ryan and Cory Turner both scored podium finishes. The second-place result was Ryan’s first this season while a third-place finish was the fourth top-five of the year for Cory.
Ryan raced to a fifth-place finish in his heat and qualified for the redraw in his Ace’s Bar and Grill No.91. Cory was third in his heat while Jamie Turner had a sixth-place finish aboard the Charlie Bee Honey No.11.
“Friday was good,” Ryan said. “We were pretty happy throughout the whole night. I started further back in my heat and advanced a few positions. It was kind of a one-lane racetrack, so we weren’t disappointed by that finish.”
Come Feature time, Ryan earned the best starting position of all three team members and started on the outside of the front row. Cory lined-up in the sixth spot while Jamie was outside the top-10.
“I got lucky and got on the front row,” Ryan said. “We made a few adjustments that we learned when we were travelling. I got lucky and got to the bottom. It took me about five laps and I got into a groove. The car’s really good.”
Cory quickly jumped ahead to third and tried to reel in his brother for the runner-up spot, but eventually settled for third after the handling on the car changed midway through the race.
“I was running him down for a while,” Cory said of Ryan. “I was feeling the car losing a little bit of drive. The car was pretty good and I just hung on for third. I beat Dylan Westbrook by about three feet at the line.”
Jim Huppunen’s advantage for the lead was to big for Ryan to overcome in the latter half of the race. The second-place finish, however, was certainly a positive for Ryan.
“It builds confidence,” Ryan said. “We didn’t see many cars all night and that’s always a good thing when you’re going ahead.”
Meanwhile, Jamie had an odd incident on the second lap of the race that hindered his performance.
“I found out later I had John Burbridge’s right-rear shock come in the car with me,” Jamie said. “It came into my right arm guard and wacked me really hard on my arm. I drove around about four laps thinking it was broken. I’ve had lot of broken bones so I realized it wasn’t broken and I finished the race. My arm wasn’t in too good a shape. It’s just one of those freak things.”’
Jamie finished the race and earned a 12th-place result.
“The pressure is on,” laughed Jamie. “Somebody didn’t fulfill his duty that night to be up there with them on the podium, so I’ll hear about that for the week.”
On Saturday night, Cory travelled to Fulton Speedway to race against the Patriot Sprint Tour. He finished second in his heat and third in the dash to earn an 11th-place starting spot in the main event. He drove into the top-10 in the opening 10 laps, but lost the brakes on the car under yellow and was forced to retire.
“I didn’t get the best start, but we were definitely going forward,” Cory said. “We caught a caution on lap 10 and my brakes went away. I’ve never had that happen. Looking back at it, it wasn’t a Patriot Canada or an Ohsweken show, so its almost lucky it happened there. We got out of it unscathed.”
The team was unloaded and ready to race on Sunday at Humberstone Speedway with the Southern Ontario Sprints, but an early evening rain cancelled the event.
Team Turner Racing will return to competition at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, June 9 when the Patriot Sprint Tour makes its only visit of the season. For additional event information at www.ohswekenspeedway.ca.
