OHSWEKEN, Ont. – July 14, 2017 – A total of 125 cars filled the pit area on Friday for Emergency Services and Sponsor Night presented by Strickland’s GMC at Ohsweken Speedway. When the final checkered flag waved, it was Dylan Westbrook, Mack DeMan, Ryan Dinning, Brandon Janssens, and Cody Sommerville who stood in the Lucas Oil Victory Lane.
KOOL KIDZ/CORR-PAK 360 SPRINT CARS
Dylan Westbrook continued his dominance Friday, picking up his fifth consecutive win in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car division.
Westbrook started fourth, but led the first lap of the race after zooming by Mitch Brown, Scott Kreutter, and Jamie Turner. Brown and Kreutter battled for second for most of the race, while Turner fell back and finished in 11th place.
Without the help of a caution, Westbrook could not be caught. He lapped all but five cars and finished the 20-lap feature with a 10.547 second lead over second place Brown. Kreutter, Mikey Kruchka and Jim Huppunen completed the top five. Cory Turner and Westbrook won qualifying heats.
STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
AJ Lewis and Jacob Dykstra brought the field to green, but they did not get far as a massive collision at the front of the field in turn one brought out the red flag. Dykstra’s sprint car flipped onto its right side, causing enough damage to knock him out of the race along with Jerry Hill and Cody Day.
The wreck caused a total reshuffling of the field as the involved leaders were placed at the back of the pack. Mack DeMan used this to his advantage. DeMan, originally the eighth starter, restarted second alongside Lewis. When the green flag waved, DeMan used the high side of the speedway to get by Lewis.
DeMan never surrendered his lead, using the bottom of the racetrack to navigate lapped traffic and pick up the feature win over Holly Porter by 6.410 seconds. Mike Thorne, Lewis and Hannah Ferrell rounded out the top five.
Jesse McDonald, AJ Lewis, Jacob Dykstra, and Josh Shantz were heat winners. Liam Martin won the B-Main.
MIDDLEPORT MECHANICAL THUNDER STOCKS
Three and four-wide racing brought out an early lap 1 red flag at the beginning of the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks 20-lap feature. The wreck took out seven of the 23 starters in the feature, including polesitter Nick Liverance.
Logan Shwedyk took the lead out of the caution, but was only able to hold it for three laps as Ken Sargent came storming from behind to take the lead.
The two-car battle for the lead quickly became a four-car battle, as Ryan Dinning and Dave Bailey made their way from the back of the field again to join the leaders by lap 8. Dinning took the lead for good on lap 10, but Bailey fought valiantly side-by-side until the checkered flag flew.
For Dinning, it was his second consecutive win. No one has beat Dinning or Bailey in the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks division since July 22, 2016.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Gary Hodgson raced out to an early lead at the start of the 15-lap HRW Automotive Mini Stocks Feature but was soon challenged by Brandon Janssens. Using the high side of the racetrack, Janssens was able to get by Hodgson on lap six.
A Dusty DeBoer crash along the front straightaway on lap 9 brought Hodgson and Janssens back together. When the green flew again, Janssens used the top of the speedway to get a lead on Hodgson. He never yielded that lead, taking the feature win, one week after finishing a disappointing 24th.
Brandon Crumbie was able to get by Hodgson on lap 12 to take second place, while Hodgson settled for third. Aaron Rewutzky and Nick Masi completed the top five.
Janssens, Hodgson, and Bobby Tolton were heat winners. Fabio Olivierie won the B-Main.
GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Tim Jamieson had the pole for the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers 12-lap feature, but a lap one yellow flag shuffled the field. When green was displayed, Cody Sommerville charged out of the gate and took the lead. Sommerville, who debuted his new ride last week, was a man on a mission. He never relented despite a hard charging Adam Plazek.
Lapped traffic was not a problem for Sommerville, who was able to weave in and out of the slow cars on the small track at Ohsweken. Plazek, fought off third place challenger Dustin Longboat, but the lapped traffic got the best of him in his quest to take down Sommerville.
