OHSWEKEN, Ont. – July 21, 2017 – A total of 129 cars packed the pit area for Christmas in July and Autograph Night presented by Jibs Action Sports at Ohsweken Speedway. When the final checkered flags waved, it was Dylan Westbrook, Mack DeMan, Derek Lemyre, Brandon Janssens, and Eric Maas who stood in Lucas Oil Victory Lane.
KOOL KIDZ/CORR-PAK 360 SPRINT CARS
A second-place starting position was all Dylan Westbrook needed to pick up his sixth straight win in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars division at Ohsweken Speedway. Westbrook took the lead from pole-sitter Alex Hill following a lap 1 caution and was able to hold it following a lap 2 red flag which saw Jamie Turner’s car flip on its side.
Westbrook was only slowed by lapped traffic late in the race. He passed all but six of the 19 starters. Westbrook’s six consecutive wins set a new track record a Ohsweken. Glenn Styres, held the previous record of five straight victories.
STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
A thrilling 20-lap Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars Feature saw several racers challenge for the lead. Mike Thorne used his second-place starting position to lead early, but he was soon confronted by Holly Porter and Mack DeMan.
A three-wide battle for the lead down the back straightaway on lap 15 saw Porter use the bottom of the racetrack, while DeMan and Thorne fought it out on the outside. Porter took the lead from Thorne on lap 16, but was only able to hold onto it for a short period of time as DeMan took the lead one lap later.
A late caution set up a three-lap dash to the finish. When the checkered flew, DeMan prevailed and picked up his second consecutive win.
MIDDLEPORT MECHANICAL THUNDER STOCKS
For the first time since last season, someone other than Dave Bailey or Ryan Dinning was in Lucas Oil Victory Lane at the end of the 20-lap Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock feature.
Sixteenth starting Derek Lemyre was simply overpowering in his quest to knock off both Bailey and Dinning. Lemyre powered through the outside line to grab the lead on lap 3 and he never looked back.
A lap 19 caution set up a showdown between Bailey and Lemyre with one to go. On the restart, Lemyre picked the high line and was able to fight off Bailey for his first win of the year.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Jason Dixon and Patrick Abrahamsson brought the field to green in the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks 15-lap Feature, but Davey Boughton led lap 1. A lap 2 caution opened the door for sixth-place starter Brandon Janssens, who used the outside line to lead lap 3.
A scary moment on lap 7 saw B-Main Winner Dusty DeBoer viciously flip going into turn 3, bringing out the red. DeBoer was able to walk away from the crash, though the same thing could not be said for his #23 machine.
Following the red, eleventh-place starter Nick Masi joined Janssens in a battle for the lead. A single file restart following a caution on lap 11 sealed the deal for Janssens, as he used the outside line once again to hold of a hard-charging Masi.
GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Jake Maas started third in the 12-lap Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bomber Feature and he was able to use that to his advantage jumping out to an early lead.
A caution on lap 5 tightened the field and set up an exciting restart. When green flew, Maas reassumed his lead, opening up a couple of car lengths lead on Tim Jamieson and Gillian Hils. Maas expertly navigated lapped traffic and held on for the win.
The most exciting battle on the race track was for second place, as Hils and Jamieson were side-by-side for most of the feature. In the end, Hils was able to use the bottom of the race track to edge Jamieson for second. Lucas Smith and Alex Maas completed the top five.
