CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (August 15, 2019) – Cory Turner is eagerly awaiting this Friday’s Southern Ontario Sprints Showdown at Ohsweken Speedway on the heels of a strong second-place finish when he unloaded the Burger Barn/Ace 1 Construction/Mobil 1 No.13 on August 9.

Turner started eighth for the 20-lap main event last Friday night and drove to a runner-up finish. The No.13 raced into fourth in the opening laps and then assumed the second spot after the top-two runners crashed on lap 13. In the closing laps, Turner nearly caught leader Mack DeMan amongst lapped traffic.

“I needed another couple of laps,” Turner explained. “I watched the video and I was catching him by six or seven-tenths per lap because he was stuck in traffic. He was faster in clean air, but we might have had something for him. The way the track was, there was really only moisture on the very top and the very bottom. If you got caught in middle, you would just sit there and light your tires up until the straightaway.”

Over the course of the night, Turner felt his car was strong throughout and even improved towards the end of the Feature.

“We were good in hot laps and might have been a little too tight in the heat race,” Turner said, “but it came in really nice the last six or seven laps in the Feature. I was pretty happy with the car.”

Following his second-place finish, Turner is only 23 points behind point leader Mack DeMan and 12 points behind Dylan Westbrook in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car standings at Ohsweken. It’s also a full points event for the Southern Ontario Sprints, where Turner enters the event third in the standings, still in close championship contention. The added cars from the outside tour and an extra five laps also change the dynamic of the race.

“This week is a big wild card with the SOS in town,” Turner said. “It’s a different kind of race because there’s usually more cars and lots of lapped traffic. It’s 25 laps as well, so you really have to have your eyes open.”

With full points on the line in both standings, Turner recognizes the importance of finishing well in this week’s event.

“We’ve been busy every night this week preparing,” Turner added. “We want to be as ready as we possibly can be and not beat ourselves. Everything is amplified.”

While this week’s event is a big one on the track for Turner and his Burger Barn Racing team, next week will bring a big off-track event. Team Turner Racing will host their annual corn roast in the pits after the races at Ohsweken on August 23. The annual event is a tradition that started with the family’s racing patriarch Don Turner.

“We always look forward to our annual corn roast,” Turner said. “It’s always a great time and an excellent opportunity for us to catch up with our racing family and friends who we don’t always get to spend enough time with throughout the season. We hope everyone can make it out.”

Race time at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, August 16 is 7:30pm. For additional information on Cory Turner’s remaining events at Ohsweken Speedway with the Southern Ontario Sprints, visit www.OhswekenSpeedway.ca and www.SouthernOntarioSprints.ca.
