@OhswekenSpdway •OAKLAND, Ont. – September 13, 2016 – Brad Herron led the way for the Insta-Insulation Motorsports team on Friday night with a sveenth-place finish in a caution-filled Crate Sprint Car feature. Karl Sault suffered a DNF after he was involved in a collision during the Thunder Stock feature.
Herron stared at the back of his heat race in the Miska Trailer Factory/Climatizer Cellulose No.12 after a high pill draw and battled to fifth-place finish. He lined up in the middle of a tough field and raced to seventh-place finish in a caution-filled race.
“We would just get going and there would be another caution. It was packed with cautions, which makes it aggravating because it’s hard to get in to a rhythm,” Herron said.
Continued Herron, “We were up to sixth and I was looking at Hunsinger thinking I could probably size him up for fifth. Then we had a caution with two to go and Shone Evans got around us on the top. It was still a decent night. The car was good, just could have been a little bit better.”
With the 360 Sprint Cars away from Ohsweken, the Crate Sprint Cars were the top class at the track for the night. It helped keep plenty of moisture in the surface.
“Being the only Sprint Car class I figured the track was going to stay pretty tacky, which it did. It was one of those fast, tacky tracks where everybody’s going the same speed so it’s hard to pass,” Herron said.
Herron will return to action this Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17 with teammate Alex Schuts for the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. The Crate Sprint Cars compete Friday night for 20 laps with timed hot laps to set the field before the 12-lap 602 challenge on Saturday. Schuts took the weekend off to prepare for the big doubleheader weekend.
“This weekend’s going to be awesome. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a little bit chaotic,” Herron said.
Four drivers will have the chance to take the 602 challenge on Saturday night to start at the back and earn a $1,602 payday to win.
“I think I would probably take the challenge because what do you have to lose? If we make the redraw, I would say sure. Let’s put our money where out mouth is,” Herron explained.
Sault Suffers DNF
Karl Sault was battling for a win before a couple of spins resulted in a DNF. Sault held the pole for the 20-lap A-Main in Great Lakes Brewery No.81 and raced alongside front starters Dave Bailey and Ryan Dinning.
“The three of us were racing together at the front. I was on the outside and I slipped up a little bit. I tried to catch back up and I overdrove corners one and two, so I looped it,” Sault said.
He resumed the race at the rear of the field and tried to battle through the field.
“I was trying to work my way back up through the field and I looped it again, but the second time I got hit,” Sault said, adding the contact locked up the steering to end his night.
Sault has one final race this season on Friday during the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.
“It will be the same approach this week. We’ll just go and have fun,” Sault said.
