BRIGHTON, Ont. (September 1, 2019) – Dylan Westbrook moved into a tie for third all-time on the Southern Ontario Sprints feature win list on Saturday night at Brighton Speedway, while Mother Nature interfered with the second half of the Labour Day Classic weekend.
Ryan Turner and Steve Lyons made up the front row for Saturday night’s 25 lap feature race. Several yellow flags slowed the pace, but Turner held serve after each restart and led the first 15 laps until Dylan Westbrook took over. Westbrook went on to claim the 18th SOS feature win of his career, and ninth at Brighton Speedway. Rain on Sunday night spoiled Westbrook’s bid for a weekend three-peat, as the 20-year-old driver also became the all-time Ohsweken Speedway feature win leader on Friday night.
Ryan Turner took over the championship points lead by coming home with a runner-up finish, followed by Steve Lyons, Jake Brown, and Mitch Brown. Jacob Dykstra, eighth row starter Cory Turner, Rick Wilson, Shane Ross, and Holly Porter rounded out the top ten. Ryan Turner, Mitch Brown, Jake Brown, and Dylan Westbrook claimed heat race wins, while Kyle Phillips won the Dash for Cash presented by Naylor Dock Systems, Docks Are Us, and Four Points Sheraton Hotels.
NOTES:
-Shawn Sliter and Dave Dykstra traded cars after heat race action on Saturday. Problems on Sliter’s 22 car necessitated the change, with Sliter jumping behind the wheel of the 71SX car which Dykstra was slated to compete with. Sliter was able to advance 11 positions in the feature and earn Hard Charger honours from Man Cave Racing.
-Feature winner Dylan Westbrook drew the number five after the race, awarding a brand new American Racer tire from Grisdale Racing Products to fifth place finisher Mitch Brown.
-The 17th Annual SOS Labour Day Classic weekend at Brighton to have a race rained out. The only other Labour Day Classic rainouts occurred in 2006 when both nights were washed out by the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto. Rick Wilson (8), Glenn Styres (4), and Dylan Westbrook (3) are now the only drivers with more than two Labour Day Classic wins; Chris Jones, Dain Naida, and Ryan Hunsinger each have two LDC wins, while Jake Brown, Mitch Brown, Cody Geldart, Joe Middlemiss, Dick Mahoney, Keith Dempster, Charlie Sandercock, Ryan Susice, and Steve Lyons each have one.
-Dylan Westbrook is now tied with Keith Dempster for third all-time on the SOS feature win list; only Rick Wilson (33) and Glenn Styres (29) remain ahead of Westbrook’s 18 wins. Westbrook also broke a tie with Dempster for third on the Brighton Speedway SOS win list; Wilson (22) and Styres (15) are again the only drivers ahead of Westbrook, who now has nine wins at Brighton.
-Ryan Turner (812), Mitch Brown (797), Cory Turner (778), Jake Brown (765), and Holly Porter (679) make up the top five in the SOS championship standings with one points-paying race remaining on the 2019 schedule. Defending champ Cory Turner and 2015 champ Mitch Brown are looking for their second career SOS titles, while the other contenders are trying for their first.
-The Southern Ontario Sprints will return to action on Saturday, September 7 at Merrittville Speedway for the final SOS points race of the 2019 season. Race time is 7:00 p.m. For additional event information, visit www.merrittvillespeedway.com
