CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. – July 10, 2018 – A busy and rollercoaster weekend resulted in glory for Team Turner Racing with doubleheader action at Ohsweken and Brighton speedways. All three drivers, Jamie, Cory and Ryan Turner were in action both nights on Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7. Cory grabbed his second win of the season as the team drove to a win, two top-five finishes and five top-10 results.
Cory Turner
Cory Turner led the way for the team when he scored his second win of the season on Saturday at Brighton. After finishing second in the first heat of Southern Ontario Sprints action, a heat which Jame won, Cory’s team pulled the pole for the 25-lap Feature. The front row starting position proved beneficial for Cory as he dashed through lapped traffic on several occasions and then held off Mitch Brown on a green-white-checkered finish to each the win.
“You have to go where they’re not,” Cory said of racing with the lapped cars. “I was running the top and the first couple of cars I got to were running the bottom, so that was okay and I got through them without any real trouble. After that, a couple of times guys would run low and all of a sudden switch their line. I almost got into the back of a couple of guys. I just tried to keep all four wheels on it and I knew we had the fastest car, I just needed to get through those guys as quick as I could.”
He did just that on the way to the victory, but 24 hours earlier it didn’t look like Cory would get to race the rest of the weekend. On Friday at Ohsweken, Cory quickly jumped from fourth to second in his heat before the car suddenly broke to the right while he raced through turn four.
“The stud that holds the tie-rod broke and just sent us in the hay bales in turn four,” Cory said. “I thought the car was going to be a lot worse than it was. We spent the rest of the night trying to get it back together, which we have an excellent team. We had six or seven guys thrashing on it and we got it back together, but didn’t have a lot of time to set it up for the Feature.”
The team made repairs in time for Cory to start the Feature from the rear. He raced forward to earn an eighth-place finish in a race that had only a single caution on the final lap.
“I was really happy with the car considering how the heat race went,” Cory said. “You’re going to have some of those nights racing. We showed good speed all night, and I was happy after.”
Ryan Turner
Ryan Turner also had a strong weekend as he brought home a 10th-place finish on Friday night at Ohsweken and a fifth-place result on Saturday at Brighton aboard his Burger Barn/Kingpin Farms No.91.
Ryan earned a second-place finish in Friday’s heat and then ran in the top-10 for the entire race until a part failure in the closing laps.
“In the Feature, we made some adjustments that were probably not the right adjustments at the time,” Ryan said. “We ended up having a mechanical issue at the end of the night, but we still ended up 10th. It was kind of a rough ending to the night, but nothing too bad so we fixed it in the shop on Saturday.”
The setup call for the Feature was a tough one on Friday as the track changed from sunny and dusty in the heat race, to wider with some moisture for the Feature.
“There was a pretty big cushion in the heat race and it definitely was a little more slick in the heat race through the middle,” Ryan explained. “They went and watered it. It wasn’t too crazy, just our adjustments we won’t run them again.”
On Saturday, Ryan’s fifth-place finish in his heat forced him to start back in 13th for the 25-lap main event. That didn’t prove too difficult an issue though as he quickly raced forward and broke into the top-10 before the halfway mark.
“We made some adjustments for the Feature and we had a rocketship,” Ryan said. “We normally want to see cautions when we’re starting deep in the field, but we didn’t want to see one on Saturday. We got to fifth on about lap 10 and held it for the rest of the race. The driver made an error though and kind of hit the tire coming into one on the initial start that kind of bent up the front axle.”
The error didn’t prove too costly though as Ryan was pleased to earn the top-five result.
“If we had stayed green (instead of the caution with two laps to go), we probably could have gotten to about third. We would have liked to give my brother a go – congratulations to him on the win, he deserves it – but we were happy with the car and had a lot of positives tonight.”
Jamie Turner
Jamie Turner had his best weekend of the season and showed the most speed yet this year in his Charlie Bee Honey No.11. While Friday’s race at Ohsweken resulted in a 14th-place finish, Jamie certainly raced better than the results showed.
“The guys have been working really hard and it’s really starting to show. I’m an old guy and it takes a lot to knock the rust off,” joked Jamie. “Hopefully we’re starting to get pointed in the right direction.”
On Saturday night, Jamie took off from Cory and Ryan to win the first heat race of the night and the started on the pole of the Dash and drove away from the field again while running the cushion to score his second checkered flag of the night.
“I like it up there and the car was really good,” Jamie said. “I didn’t know how good and then I won the Dash as well and the guys said I was driving away.”
Come Feature time, Jamie started outside the front row with Cory on the pole, but the track had lost the small cushion at the top of the track and was slick from top to bottom.
“In the Feature, we just ran out of cushion,” Jamie said. “I just wasn’t that good once it was gone, but the car was still good. I was happy and it was a good night.”
The improvements in Jamie’s car since the season started 10 weeks ago have been quite impressive as the team has found different ways to improve the car incrementally.
“Cory, Ryan and all of the team are always trying to help me with setup and we all try to help each other,” Jamie said. “The cool part about all three of us racing, is that we get to try a lot of stuff. It starts to add up and go positively for us as the season goes on.”
The highlight of the night though was Jamie outrunning both Ryan and Cory to earn the win in the first heat race, doing so in dominating fashion.
“It doesn’t happen too often and it sure doesn’t happen often where we all get to start up front. Our friend Frank says I have bragging rights for a while after the win,” laughed Jamie following the race.
