BRIGHTON, Ont. – The 50th Anniversary season at Brighton Speedway resumed on Saturday night as Greig Truck & Trailer, Town & Country Liquidation and Orange Motorsports presented a full night of action featuring all six weekly divisions. In addition, ABC Taxi presented the second leg of the OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Modified Triple Crown.
Handley Ends Drought
Shawn Gregory (No. 1) and Derek Bowers (No. 03) started on the front row of the 30 lap OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Modified Triple Crown feature. Gregory jumped to the early lead and paced the field until a lap 4 restart when contact sent his car spinning into the infield.
On the restart Charlie Sandercock (No. 78), subbing for Shelby Mills, made a daring pass on Doug O’Blenis (No. 32) and Dan Ferguson (No. 11) to take charge of the race. Sandercock stretched his advantage to a straightaway lead while the battle for second was hotly contested. O’Blenis held off Andrew Hennessy (No. 87) for the runner-up spot while Kraig Handley (No. 91) made his march towards the front from his eighth starting position. On lap 24 he used the outside line to move into second place.
A late race caution gave Handley the opportunity to challenge Sandercock for the win. Sandercock pulled away on the restart, however a flat right front tire with a lap and half remaining cost him the victory. Handley took the lead and drove to his first win in two years over Hennessy and O’Blenis. Derrick Greig (No. 48) and Dan Ferguson completed the top five.
Sandercock Sails To Fourth Straight
The Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Model division competed in its sixth feature of the season. Charlie Sandercock (No. 57) went into the 30 lap race with a target on his back as he looked to capture his fourth win in a row. Elmer Stevenson (No. 10) and Tyler Rand (No. 84) led the field to green with Rand taking early control of the race leading the opening 13 laps.
By lap 14 however Sandercock had worked his way through the field from his tenth starting position to take the lead. Rand and Kyle Sopaz (No. 12) had the best battle of the event as the two raced back and forth for the runner-up spot. When the checkers flew Sandercock had won his fourth straight while Sopaz finished second over Rand. Steve Baldwin (No. 5) and Brandon Mowat (No. 46) had solid performances finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
Anderson Smooth In Second Win
Steven Stachura (No. 69) and Carissa Burrows (No. 02) led the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks feature to the green flag. The opening 3 laps of the 20 lap race were led by Stachura while Chris Dorland (No. 14) led the following 5 circuits. Doug Anderson (No. 72) and point leader Justin Ramsay (No. 03) wasted little time working their way to the front as Anderson got by Dorland on lap 9. Ramsay meanwhile ran in the top three until contact with another car cut his right front tire just past the half way point.
A pair of cautions in the final 4 laps slowed the event. A hard crash between outside pole sitter Burrows and Mike Freeman (No. 51) ended the night of Freeman, while Warren Mowat (No. 2) had a solid evening come to an end when his left rear wheel broke off his car coming out of corner two.
At the front, Anderson was never seriously challenged in the final half of the race and cruised to his second win of the season over Brandon Murrell (No. 19). Dorland held on to finish an impressive third. Austin Reid (No. 85) had another strong outing as he finished fourth while Ramsay rallied in the final 9 laps to finish fifth.
Josh French Finally Finds Victory Lane
Three different drivers had claimed wins in the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 division heading into week six and by the end of the 15 lap feature a fourth driver was added to the list. Matthew French (No. 51) and Keith Dunk (No. 22) started on the front row, but it was Josh French (No. 08) who very quickly moved to the top of the running order.
French held off his brother and point leader Tyler French (No. 0) over the final laps. The two cars were very even, however Josh proved too tough for Tyler as he drove to his first win of the season. Tyler finished a close second while Adam Fleiler (No. 11) was third. Jeff Humphry (No. 17) and Matthew Moore (No. 14) completed the top five.
Dempster and Golden Stout In Stinger Wins
Saturday night marked the second night of competition for the Quinte Septic Stingers. In the 12 lap Junior feature Joel Dempster (No. 13) was dominant and won in convincing fashion over Willy Bulten (No. 50) and Aiden Fletcher (No. 42). The win helped Dempster bounce back from mechanical problems that plagued him in week one.
The Super Stinger feature came down to the closing laps as leader Mark MacDonald (No. 28) over drove the fourth corner and allowed Meghan Golden (No. 07) to sneak by for the race lead. Golden held MacDonald off to claim her first win of 2017. Chantel Golden (No. 5) also challenged throughout the race for the win and finished third.
