PETERBOROUGH, ON (October 13, 2017)- “We got screwed last year, and I wasn’t going to let that happen again. This win means more to me than a championship; it means more to me than anything right now.”
The Autumn Colours Classic weekend was full of success and checkered flags for Hawkestone, Ontario’s Rick Spencer-Walt, as he picked up the win in the Limited Late Model 75-lap feature for his second career ACC crown.
The weekend didn’t start out how Spencer-Walt wanted, though, as he’d make contact with Doug Wills on Lap 3 of the first heat, followed by contact with Steve Powell two laps later, en route to finishing sixth. The second qualifier didn’t go much better with another sixth.
Starting pole virtue of his Chase for the Colours victory in July, he immediately jumped out to the early lead ahead of Ryan Kimball. Throughout the event, he was challenged multiple times through the six restarts by some of the best drivers in the division, but each restart he perfected to keep his advantage over the field for all 75 laps.
Standing in victory lane, Spencer-Walt was quick to thank Jr Hanley, Mike McColl, the entire Spencer-Walt Motorsports crew, and sponsors for their support.
On top of the late model feature, Spencer-Walt also drove a mini stock owned by Nolan Gould and Ryan Babin. The heats didn’t go as planned, as he got caught up in traffic in one, followed by mechanical issues in the second.
As a result, he was forced to run the b-main on Saturday night. Starting pole, he jumped out to the early lead and never looked back despite the multiple restarts and challenges en route to scoring the win.
Starting deep in the field for the main event on Sunday, he avoided the first lap crash and began to make up ground, before the mechanical issues struck again on Lap 4, sending him to pit road early.
Looking back on the year, Spencer-Walt scored seven Sunset Speedway Late Model points victories, the Spring Velocity at Sunset Speedway, and the Chase for the Colours at Peterborough Speedway, along with the pair of victories this past weekend.
