BRIGHTON, ON (April 18, 2018)- A brisk Spring has not hindered the driver’s excited for the upcoming 2018 season at Brighton Speedway.
As time ticks away, racers and their enthusiastic crews are holed up in their shops diligently completing their cars in anticipation for the April 28th Season Opener. Past Champions, #57 Charlie Sandercock, #87 Andrew Hennessy, #72 Doug Anderson and #0 Tyler French are ready and set for the opening Green Flag and a chance to defend their crowns however their will be a number of drivers trying to over take the throne.
With over 95 Pre Registered cars on the Race Card, the Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Model Division is sitting with 20 drivers, the Bainer’s OilGARD Anti Rust Canadian Modifieds have 15, the Brighton Automotive Thunder Stock Division sits with 30 drivers pre registered. The Bill’s Johns Comp 4 division has 12 expected drivers and combined the Quinte Septic Stinger Division has 17 participants with all divisions feature some new blood!
New driver coming up from the Kart Klub this year is #17 Emily Peterson. With 4 years of Kart racing experience the 15 year old from Trenton, Ontario is excited to join the ranks of Saturday night racers.
“I think it will be a good challenge for me,” Peterson said. “I am hoping to accomplish new racing skills, learn more about the car and hopefully get a win or runner up.”
This new season sees a couple of drivers transitioning from pavement racing to dirt racing. Brandt Graham from Orono, Ontario following a Championship season in the pavement Lucas Oil Sportsman Division has purchased a Canadian Modified and is set to try the 1/3rd mile clay oval for the first time.
The drive to try something new fuelled Graham’s decision to hit the dirt coupled with the opportunity to race at the same track as his dad LM #98 Craig Graham.
“This will allow our team to be able to work on two cars at the track and my dad and I can watch each other race,” Graham explained. “I look to learn to drive the car, improve every week, have fun and maybe get a few top 10 finishes.”
Entering the Late Model Division on dirt is Bryan Sudsbury from Bewdley. Sudsbury, a veteran pavement Late Model driver who has always been into dirt racing thought this new adventure would prove more fun.
“I hope to just keep it pointed in the right direction and have some fun,” he expressed. “”It has been a long time since me and the boys have gone to the track and had fun.”
Also joining the Late Model division on a full time basis is Brad Rayner of Codrington following his father’s tire tracks in the #55 Rocket.
“Last season he told me it was going to be his last therefore leaving the door open for me to hop in and see whether or not I liked racing the car,” Rayner recalled. “I had never raced any car in my life, let alone a late model.”
He loved it.
“That made me determined to see how good I could get in the future seasons to come,” he said. “My goal for this season is to make top 5 in a feature at least once and hopefully make top 10 in points.”
The Coca Cola Season Opener brought to you by Brighton Recycling will hit the track on Saturday, April 28th at 7:00 PM. Admission for this event is only $4.00 with a non perishable food donation in support of the Brighton Fare Share Food Bank.
