@BrightonSpdwy •BRIGHTON, Ont. (June 30, 2016) – Justin Ramsay’s 790 of a possible 800 points in the month of June have earned the Rossmore, Ont. pilot Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Month honours.
Ramsay pulled off a near perfect month. He won all four of his qualifying heat races in June and three of four feature finishes. The only race he didn’t win was on June 11 when he finishes second to Doug Anderson in a furious and classic battle. Not too shabby a month for the driver dubbed the ‘Rossmore Rocket’.
“The last couple of weeks I’ve definitely had the car working the way I want. We changed quite a few things, but last week it worked wherever I wanted it to go. It’s back to the 2015 car. It only took half a season, but we figured it out,” the current Pro Stock point leader remarked with a laugh.
Ramsay has come through the field on several occasions, including on June 11 during his second-place run when he rallied from the rear of the field to second in just nine laps. While it may look easy from a grandstand cushion, it’s a different view from Ramsay’s seat.
“It’s challenging every week. I just get a mindset and I drive to the hole. I try not follow anybody. I want to be in a fresh line for myself,” Ramsay explained. That’s why sometimes it ends up being four-wide because I don’t pay attention to the car that’s beside the car I’m beside. I’m going for the open hole.”
With the calendar set to flip to July and eight races already in the books, Ramsay knows the dog days of the season and the summer are just around the corner. It’s those weeks and nights in the shop that can make or break a champion. To keep fresh, Ramsay and his Dirty Fast Racing team make sure to dedicate a day away from racecars.
“We try to keep Sundays for other stuff and to stay away from the shop. We keep Sundays open unless somebody’s car is smashed up, but it’s a full-time job,” Ramsay commented.
Ramsay’s winning percentage is a cool .500 so far this season (he’s won four of eight starts). Some might consider it monotonous to park in victory lane each week, but a checkered flag never gets old, he says.
“It never gets old. This year’s been good. Everybody’s stepped their game and it’s been tough,” added Ramsay.
The toughest, yet most exciting, part of Ramsay’s season schedule begins this weekend. The first combined race for the Duel on the Dirt series takes place at Ohsweken Speedway. Ramsay will also compete in a handful of other triple-header weekends throughout July and August as he travels throughout the southern part of Ontario.
“When everybody from out of town comes, or when you go out of town, it’s a blast. Those are the races we look forward to,” Ramsay said excitedly. “We make sure the car is 100% to go run the series.”
Justin Ramsay will return to action at Brighton Speedway on Saturday, July 2 for the Canada Day Mid-Season championships presented by Brighton Automotive and the Community Press featuring a Mystical Distributing Fireworks show. Time trials begin at 5:00pm before racing starts at 7:00pm. Spectator gates open at 4:00pm. Adult admission is $15. Complete event information is available at www.brightonspeedway.ca.
