On Saturday, November 10, Sunset Speedway held its annual awards banquet to celebrate and honor those teams who accomplished highest goals and achievements during the 2012 race season.
Mini Stock: Looking back at the team’s season, Gehrig – racing his first full season in the Mini Stock class – had bad luck for the first six weeks, battling a trouble engine and wiring problem that took him out of the running for Rookie of The Year. We replaced the original car with a different Honda that was a good running car and Gehrig made great strides finishing in the top five a few times in the very competitive Mini Stock class.
Gehrig raced hard from the middle of the season to the end earning him the distinction of the Most Improved Driver award. Our Mini Stock also won Best Appearing Car in the 24 car field. We are all very proud of Gehrig and his team.
Late Model Season Recap: We struggled this year on the track having one of worst seasons enduring two very serious wrecks, mechanical issues and our first blown engine in eight years. In spite of the bad luck, we never gave up, making every scheduled race event giving us our 36th season of 100 percent attendance. The commitment shown by our crew was incredible.
It was a tough season competitive wise. We ran 28 nights in 2012, and had another 19 off track shows, events and appearances, making 2012 our best year in promoting our valued sponsors. Our team always looked professional, representing each sponsors at every race and show.
The season wasn’t all bad. We won three races, had many top five’s and qualified 6th fastest of 24 of the best cars in Ontario on August 26th.We attended many off track events in 2012. We usually commit to 10 to 15, but 2012 was our highest ever with 19. Below is a recap of some of the shows we did.
At the banquet our team was honored in a few ways. We were given the Hard Luck Award for the terrible season we had on the track. Though our competitive results were not what we wanted, our efforts to promote were. Our team won Best Appearing Car, Best Appearing Pit Crew and the first ever Promotion Award.
All our sponsors will be proud to know that we were recognized by the track for our efforts to promote our sponsors, Sunset Speedway and our sport.
Special thanks to all our sponsors for making 2012 possible. We are already rebuilding for 2013, our 45th season racing and our 40th year with Quaker State. Our goal is to win the 2013 Championship and continue to represent our sport, our race venue and our valued sponsors in many shows this coming season.
Thank you from all of us at Elliott Racing Team.
