Saturday, July 13th, 2013- A packed house was on hand Saturday night as Electro Cables of Trenton featured the Southern Ontario Sprints presented by Vanzuylen Tire and Alignment.

The sunny and hot day encouraged fans to flock to the 1/3rd Speedway by the bay for an action packed night of racing, a night that saw four more new faces in victory lane including Picton native Chris Jones in the Sanderson Tire and Automotive Southern Ontario Sprint Cars.

The last time the Southern Ontario Sprints raced at Brighton Speedway on June 8th, Chris Jones came 1/100th of a second short of victory. This time around he wouldn’t be denied as he won for the second time in his career. The driver who beat him in July, Jamie Collard, finished second.

Twenty sprint cars took the green flag in the 20 lap main event with Warren Mahoney and Mitch Brown on the front row. Brown shot out to the early advantage and led the first 16 laps of the race. It was apparent very early that Jones would be a factor as he moved from his sixth place starting position to the top three in the opening laps.

There was plenty of action at all ends of the track. A pair of spins and an excursion by Glenn Styres off of corner two was not enough to produce a yellow flag.

The leaders worked their way through traffic during the middle stages of the race and before the halfway point, Jones worked by Mahoney for the second spot.

The first caution of the race came on lap 16 as Bob Crawford spun in corner four. On the restart Jones gained the advantage on Brown to take the lead. Another spin in corner four, this time by Mike Ferrell on lap 18, produced the second yellow of the night and set up for a green-white-checkered finish.

Jones was able to pull away on the restart and claim the win. Jamie Collard charged from 11th and got by Mitch Brown in the final lap for second. Brown finished third.  Travis Cunningham was the hard charger of the race. After a hard crash in corner four in his heat race the #71 team repaired the car and made the feature. Cunningham drove from the 20th starting position to finish sixth.

In the Quinte Septic Stingers Class, former division champion #42 Andy Fletcher brought home his first win of the season.  But it didn’t come easy as there was a four car battle for the lead in the closing laps.

#78 Shelby Mills brought her Bill’s Johns Comp 4 to victory lane.  Mills, a second year veteran, has been running up front for the past few weeks and was finally able to pull it all together for her first ever feature win.  Mills outlasted point leader #43 Tom Vance who continues to keep a strong lead in the points championship.

The Vanderlaan’s Building Supplies Late Models saw long time Late Model Driver #55 Mark Rayner return to victory lane.  The last time Rayner was in Victory lane in a Late Model would have been in the mid 1990’s in his famous BOSS Steel black #55 so this victory was a welcome relief for Mark who returned to the class three years ago.

Rayner took over the lead midway through the race when pole sitter #77 Caley Weese jumped the cushion in turn 4 passing a lapped car.  The race went green to checker without a caution and Rayner would hold on for the win while #46 Brandon Mowat and #57 Charlie Sandercock had a heated battle for second that Mowat would win.

#11 Dan Ferguson of Picton would be the only repeat winner on the evening.  Ferguson picked up his second win of the season but it didn’t come easy as #87 Andrew Hennessy who has been extremely fast since installing his new GM Crate Motor four weeks ago.  Hennessy tried high and low constantly pressuring Ferguson but could not get the job done and had to settle for second.

The action doesn’t end at Brighton Speedway! Next Saturday July 20th Mark Heating and Cooling presents our Salute to the Forces Night featuring the Late Models, Canadian Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Comp 4 Triple Crown, a Pro Stock Mechanic Race and Figure 8 Race.  All CFB Trenton Personnel are admitted FREE with ID.  Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to cheer on your fellow service members as they race the 1/3rd  mile oval.  Gates open at 5:30 and racing starts at 7:00 pm sharp each Saturday night.  Coming Soon on Saturday July 27th Deerhaven Farm and Garden presents the Adecco Summer Smash Monster Truck Show featuring Krazy Train and Aftershock along with a complete race program.    Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Speedway Office of Saturday night at the race track.
