This past weekend saw Damian Cownden Racing Top Fuel Nitro-Harley Davidson team take to the track for the first event of the 2012 Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association (CMDRA) season. The team came into the event in Napierville, Quebec as the two time defending Canadian champions.
The team qualified in the number two position behind Edmonton’s Kevin Boyer, with a speed of 170mph (273.58kmh) and an elapsed time of 4.88 seconds on the 1/8th mile track. The number 1 and 2 qualifiers would face each other in the final round, with Damian Cownden taking the victory over Boyer with an elapsed time of 4.41 seconds at 167mph (268.76kmh). Boyer had a slight advantage at the starting line and the pair were neck and neck until Boyer experienced “tire shake” at the 330 foot mark, allowing Cownden to take the opening round of the season.
“It’s a great way to start the CMDRA season, and makes the trip across the country well worth it. The team tuned the Parker Johnston Industries Harley-Davidson perfectly, and we couldn’t have been happier,” said Cownden after the event.
The victory was a successful rebound from a disappointing finish 4 weeks earlier in the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, NV. That event saw Cowden and the team make it to the semi-finals where they were sidelined with engine problems on their nitro methane fueled Harley-Davidson.
The next event for the Damian Cownden Racing team is June 2nd and 3rd at Toronto Motorsports Park in Toronto, ON.
