BRIGHTON, ON (June 11, 2018)- It was a ‘Vantastic’ night of action packed racing at Brighton Speedway on Saturday as seven divisions hit the 1/3 mile clay oval as part of Salute to our Forces night.
The night presented by CANEX marked the first Thunder Stock Duel on the Dirt Qualifier. The Gord’s Water Vantastics minivan races, a fly over by 8-Wing Trenton and a Fan Appreciation autograph session as highlights during the night.
Sandercock scores third season win
In another strong showing inside pole sitter Steve Baldwin (No. 5) was leader of the pack for a third of the Vanderlaan Building Supplies Pro Late Model 30 lap feature. Baldwin and Andy Mayhew (No.1) went toe to toe for the lead while Charlie Sandercock (No. 57) and Phil Potts flexed their muscles from mid-pack moving their way up into the top five on the eighth time by. Sandercock snatched the lead on lap 11 where he stayed to score his third win of the season. Potts settled into third right behind Baldwin bumping Mayhew back to fourth where he ultimately finished. With three laps left to go Potts pushed past Baldwin and sailed to an impressive second place finish. Brandon Mowat (No.46) clinched third, Mayhew (No. 1) in fourth and Caley Weese (No.77) took home fifth respectively.
Hennessy holds on to winning streak
Since the start of the season on May 5, Canadian Modified driver Andrew Hennessy (No. 87) hasn’t let off the throttle. The Picton native drove from his 10th starting position to capture his 4th straight win.
Leslie Turcotte-Mowat (No.2) and Brandt Graham (No.14) took the field to green in the 25-lap OilGard Anti Rust feature, however Kraig Handley (No. 91) took over on the fourth lap and dominated the rest of the race. He never looked back until Hennessy was hot on his heels on the eighth trip around. It was one of the fiercest battles on the season thus far as the pair went door to door with Hennessy snatching the lead on the 16th lap only to have Handley take it back hold on until the final lap. A caution on the 24th lap reset the field and worked to Hennessy’s advantage as he took checkers with Handley in runner up position. Adam Whaley (No. 12) took home third, Curtis King (No.07) fourth and Doug O’Blenis (No.32) who worked his way from dead last earned fifth.
Ramsay rides to checkers again
Steve Stachura (No.69) had the lead at the drop of the green flag in the Brighton Automotive Thunder Stock Duel on the Dirt Qualifier. He used the bottom groove to protect his advantage however the pace slowed dramatically with multiple caution periods through the 20 lap affair.
Through the restarts, championship contender Justin Ramsay (No.03) closed in to take the lead on lap 7. The 10th trip around began a stop and start battle between Ramsay and runner up Wade Purchase (No. 53). The pair was fierce right to the end that saw Ramsay take checkers in a photo finish. Despite a lot of body damage to his right side Campbellford Chrysler driver of the week Austin Reid (No. 85) drove hard to earn third and Chris Dorland (No. 14) who is also proving to be a tough contender this season took home a fourth place finish. Despite a trip to the pits pushing him to the back of the pack, Doug Anderson (No.72) returned to battle rounding out the top five.
Moore makes mad dash to victory lane
Matthew Moore (No.14) made a mad dash from his third starting position to take the lead on the second lap and he never let up throwing a wrench in Adam Flieler’s undefeated streak. For 12 of the Bill John’s Comp 4 15 lap feature, Moore and runner up Tyler French (No.0) treated fans to a thrilling back and forth fight to the finish. The night also saw a strong third place finish by Devon Kippen (No. 43). Jamie Sandercock sailed fourth place in Emily Peterson’s 17E and Willy Bulten (No. 50) took home fifth.
Golden Shines; Gregory takes two; Conley cruises to checkered flag
After a month delay due to weather the Quinte Septic Stingers had their chance to return to the track Saturday. Defending Senior Stinger champion Brittany Golden (No. 85) got back to her winning ways taking the 12-lap feature.
Brock Gregory (No. 1) remains undefeated after pushing hard through the field to victory lane in the 12-lap Junior Stinger feature.
An accident during the Gord’s Water Vantastics heat laps delayed racing action while emergency personnel attended the scene and tended to the passenger in Nate Vanhecke’s (No.11). When the feature race commenced Rod Conley with his passenger Kathy Belford jumped into the lead on the third trip of the 10 lap feature to claim the Vantastics checkers.
NEXT WEEK AT BRIGHTON: Vanderlaan Building Products Ltd. & First Place Trailers host the SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS presented by Sanderson Tire & Automotive along with the Larry’s Towing Thunder Stock Triple Crown Race 2, Vanderlaan Building Products Late Model Division & Bainer’s OilGARD Anti Rust Canadian Modified Division. The Bills John Comp 4 and Quinte Septic Stinger Divisions will not be competing. Admission is $20 for Adults and $55 for a Family Pass. The green flag drops at 7 p.m.
