AMELIASBURG, ON (September 10, 2020)- 2020’s local racing schedule has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its place in the history books and now it’s time for racers to earn their time in the motorsports spotlight. Angie Kirby is hoping strong finishes in marquee shows at Brighton and Brockville Speedways will make the most of what has been a difficult season.

At 47-years-old, Kirby – who hails from Ameliasburg, Ontario in Prince Edward County – has been a fixture in Brighton Speedway’s Thunder Stock division for seven seasons. While she may have waited a little longer than most to take her first turn behind the wheel, racing has always been an important part of life for the mother of two and grandmother of twins.

“When I began my career in the sport, I started with the No. 08 because it was my Cousin Bill Monro’s. As kids, we always went to the track to watch him race,” admitted Kirby, who owns Virtual Office Solution. “We lost the legend, Bill Monro last season and for as long as I race the No. 08 will be on the track in his memory.”

Since her start in the Stinger class, Kirby’s focus has been on the familiar layout at Brighton, but her move to the Thunder Stock added some new venues to her resume including the Duel in the Dirt shows at Merrittville, Humberstone and Ohsweken. This year’s limited schedule at home has turned her into a road warrior, with dates at Brockville and Cornwall thrown into the mix. The opportunity to join her second family including fellow Thunder Stock racers Adam Turner and Carissa Burrows and get some seat time at other tracks means a lot.

“Brighton has always been my favourite track, but lately I’ve developed a soft spot for Brockville,” said the racer. “Anytime you can get a win, it’s a memorable experience. It might have only been a heat race, but I’ll never forget the checkered flag from the Fall Nationals in 2017.”

With backing from her husband/crew chief Greg Cornell, the hardworking team and sponsorship support from Kafka Kort Barristers, Upper Canada Waterproofing, Sandra Hussey – Exit Realty, Gilmour’s Meat Shop & Deli – Rossmore, Grosse Construction, Collyer Bros. Construction, County Vine Tours, Scott’s Welding, KD Transmission, Vinyl Solution, C & C Small Engines and Mr. Runningboard, the No. 08 team is looking forward to the Applefest Lite show; Saturday, September 19th at Brighton and the Northeast Fall Nationals October 2nd and 3rd at Brockville.

“We didn’t get to race as often as I would’ve liked, so it would be nice to close-out the 2020 schedule with some solid finishes.”
