PICTON, Ont. – September 2, 2017 – Andrew Hennessy is in the midst of a career season and continues to perform at his best as he rolls into the month of September with a big money event on the horizon at Brighton Speedway.
After two wins in August, Hennessy has the championship points lead in the Canadian Modified division at the Northumberland County track.
“It’s been a lot of fun to date this year finishing every race in the top five,” Hennessy said. “We’ve had our share of problems but we made the best out of every situation thrown at us and it’s paying off in the point standings again this year.”
There are three point races remaining in 2017, including this weekend’s Labour Day Classic doubleheader at Brighton where Hennessy will race both Saturday and Sunday. He holds the hot hand in the division coming off a win last weekend and a second-place result the week before. He’s also the points leader heading into the home stretch, but isn’t going to let it change how he prepares.
“Heading into this double header weekend I don’t feel any added pressure as the point leader,” Hennessy said. “I feel that making it through this weekend is the most important part of our season now and that’s my focus. I have a sizeable lead now at 185 points after we had our best month in August.”
Hennessy’s ability to avoid the pressure comes from a strong sense of confidence in the racing program he has built over the last decade with his team. Consistent maintenance and attention to detail have fueled the team’s success over the past few season and have put Hennessy in the driver’s seat down the stretch this year.
“I have always had a great deal of confidence in my program and my race car,” Hennessy said. “I will always put as many hours in the shop as I need in order to bring the best car I can. I know I have probably the best guy in the pits to lean on in Bill Monro. I owe Bill most of the credit for my success racing at Brighton Speedway.”
The biggest race of the season for the Canadian Modified drivers in just a week away now with the $2,000-to-win Danny Reid Memoriai scheduled for September 9. The race honours the late Danny Reid, who was a tough competitor and staple of Brighton Speedway throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The race has become the biggest on the schedule this year and also features several hundred dollars in lap money and contingency prizes.
“The Danny Reid Memorial means a lot to me mostly because of what Danny’s generation meant to Brighton speedway. They were the first hometown heroes so to speak,” Hennessy said. “I didn’t know Danny on a personal level, but I have a love for the “good ol days” & a respect I can’t explain for the “good ol boys” of the sport. I love that era of racing that Danny came from. They built their own cars from scratch starting with chalk lines drawn out on the garage floor.”
“For me the Danny Reid memorial is as much about celebrating an individual as it is remembering a generation that paved the way for us all being here today to do what we all love.”
To say Hennessy is glad the calendar has rolled over to September is an understatement.
“My favourite month in racing has always been September,” Hennessy smiled. “That’s when all the big money races are and the battles get even more competitive. I try to enjoy September as much as I can and soak it up because it’s basically the beginning to the end of a long season.”
Hennessy returns to action for the Labour Day Classic Doubleheader at Brighton on September 2 and 3. Race time is 7:00pm on Saturday and 6:00pm on Sunday. For additional event information, visit www.brightonspeedway.com.
