BURLINGTON, ON – WeatherTech, a proud partner of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, announced recently that the organization will be donating $10,000 to ‘Mike’s Manscaping Challenge for Cancer’, an initiative spearheaded by Tiger-Cats centre Mike Filer in support of Tomorrow Stems From You to raise money for the new Stem Cell Transplant Unit expansion at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre.
In addition to the financial donation to the hospital, which now currently sits at just over $20,000, Filer will also be donating his hair to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The program, launched December 8, 2017 ( www.hamiltonhealth.ca/mmc4c ), challenges fans/supporters to donate to have Filer either shave his trademark manly beard down to a new-look handlebar moustache, or cut off his beautiful lengthy flowing hair on January 17, 2018.
‘Mike’s Manscaping Challenge for Cancer’ had raised just over $10,000 until WeatherTech promised to double that amount Friday by donating $10,000 themselves if a certain condition was met by Filer.
“This is such an amazing initiative for a great cause, and based on our strong relationship with the Tiger-Cats and Mike, we saw this as a great opportunity to give back to our community in Hamilton,” said Tony Page and Joe Magri from WeatherTech Canada in a joint statement. “We wanted to add a fun wrinkle to it and have Mike earn it by asking him to do not just one or the other, but both!”
“The response to this initiative since literally minutes after we launched has been truly overwhelming for both me and my family,” said Filer. “I can’t thank everyone enough for the ongoing support, especially our partners at WeatherTech, Tiger-Cats fans, and CFL fans across the country. I obviously can’t turn down this generous offer, and since the race is literally neck-and-neck anyways, it makes a lot of sense to do both. Let’s do this!”
Filer, one of the longest serving members of the Tiger-Cats, lost his mother, Kim, to cancer in January 2017. For nine years, Kim had been receiving treatment at the Juravinksi Hospital and Cancer Centre during her journey of cancer. One of the steps was a stem cell transplant at the hospital to help treat her lymphoma. The entire Filer family knows on a deeply personal level the importance of increasing the hospital’s capacity to treat acute blood cancers.
