August 18, 2013- Brockville, ON- Jim’s Performance Plus was on hand this past Saturday night and with only three weeks remaining drivers were up on the wheel and charging hard. Track titles are still on the line for some and many drivers are still searching to get to Victory Lane.
The 358 Modifieds have put on some fantastic racing throughout the 2013 season and this race did not disappoint.
Adam Moore and Dave Austin started on the front row and led the field into Turn 1. Moore and Austin seemed to have equal cars through the first two laps as they raced wheel to wheel before Moore was able to get the advantage down the back stretch.
The yellow flew for the first time on Lap 2 for a five car accident. All drivers were able to pull away and rejoin the field.
The green came back out and Bryan Rogers made his bid for the top spot as he worked the high side on Moore to take over the lead down the back straightaway. The first of two consecutive cautions flew for Lee Miller and Joe Banks, who both had problems getting through Turns 3 and 4.
Once the racing resumed on lap 10, Rogers held the top spot but Stephane Lafrance was on the move from his tenth starting position. Lafrance had made some daring three-wide passes to move into the top five and quickly reeled in Bryan Rogers.
On lap 14 Lafrance put the power to the ground and took the lead away leaving Rogers, Lee Gill, Lee Ladouceur and Danny O’Brien to battle it out in the top five.
April Wilson brought out the next yellow as she spun in Turns 1 & 2. On the restart Lafrance was able to get away from Rogers but Danny O’Brien was on the move from his 16th starting spot. O’Brien made his way to fourth getting by Ladouceur, then one lap later he would get by Rogers for the third spot and quickly close in on Gill for the runner up position until the final yellow flew for Roger Levesque who spun in Turn 1.
On the final restart Lafrance jumped out to a four car length lead and would hold it the rest of the way to score his second win of the season with Danny O’Brien edging out Lee Gill for second. Bryan Rogers and Pat O’Brien rounded out the top five.
In Sportsman action Sheldon Hoogwerf has been shut out of Victory Lane for almost three seasons and would use his outside pole position to take the lead away from rookie Aaron Pugh.
Hoogwerf had a stout race car in the early going and would pull out to a half straight away lead by Lap 5. The caution would fly on Lap 5 as Aaron Pugh lost the handle while running second, collecting third place running Jessica Power and Jonathan Ferguson.
Power and Pugh pulled away but Ferguson’s car was heavily damaged.
On the restart Hoogwerf was on a mission as he continued his strong run at the front of the field over Jason Shipclark and Kenny Polite. Two-time, and defending, track champion Chris Herbison had an interesting night. After a flip in his heat race earlier in the night, he started in the 16th spot and made his way towards the front of the field using the outside moving into the fourth position by lap 16.
Hoogwerf was still out front but Shane Pecore was also on the move from his 13th starting spot. Pecore made his way to the second place after a great side-by-side battle with Shipclark and began to run down Hoogwerf with three laps to go.
On the final lap Hoogwerf led, but Pecore drove the car deep into Turn 3. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as Hoogwerf ended the long dry spell with a huge win over Pecore, Shipclark, Herbison and Kenny Polite.
The Rookie Sportsman had the biggest field of the season as nine cars took the green flag in the 15 lap affair.
The event was slowed by several cautions due to quickly changing track conditions but the driver who had no problems was points leader Chris Bakker. The former Rookie driver started on the outside pole and made a serious run at his first ever win as he pulled out to a straightaway lead. Behind him Jasmine David was also charging forward after starting in the fourth spot. David quickly moved by Jamie Young and ran down Bakker just past the halfway point.
The final yellow flew on Lap 13 involving Jamie Young, Tristan Draper and last week’s winner Jeremy Coulter. On the restart David got the nose alongside of Bakker but the points leader was not to be denied as he finally got the monkey off his back, winning by three car lengths over David, Josh Powers and Richard Raison. Scott McGill, in his first ever Sportsman race, rounded out the Top 5.
The Street Stocks have seen the most different winner in a season as 1ten different driver have taken the checkered flag in 11 events.
A major crash on the front stretch brought out the red flag on the initial green flag. Danny Mocibob and John Gifford took the hardest hits but were able to walk away, however both cars were destroyed. When the racing got going Travis Andrews, who started from the pole was looking to become the second, two-time winner of the year as he battled it out with the only current two-time winner Kevin Fetterly Jr. The two drivers raced wheel-to-wheel for nine laps until the yellow flew for Pascal Racette, who spun in Turn 4.
On the final restart Fetterly charged to the inside of Andrews and the battle was on.
The two drivers touched in Turn 3 and rubbed rails down the frontstretch, but it was Andrews getting to the line first over Todd Raabe.
Fetterly blew a right rear tire relegating him to a third place finish. Darrick Eaton and Peter Raabe rounded out the top five.
The Rookie division has been all about two drivers this season as Corbin Miller and Quincy Roberts have a close battle going on for the track title.
Miller would use the third starting spot to his advantage as he took lead away from early pace setter Mike McGonegal. Miller was determined to get to Victory Lane after a couple weeks of bad luck and had the car to beat on this night.
Behind him Quincy Roberts was on the move from his tenth starting position, as he charged to the Number Two spot on Lap 8. Roberts then ran down Miller and got the top spot away on Lap 11.
The yellow flew on Lap 13 as Mike McGonegal’s great run came to an end as he tangle with Samantha Henderson and Geneva Sheffield in Turn 1.
On the restart, Quincy Roberts was unable to get his car going and Miller took full advantage to grab the lead away and hold it to the checkered flag, scoring his third win of the year over Roberts, Colin Tracey and Josh Kirkland. Samantha Henderson rallied for the back of the pack to finish fifth.
The Ford Dingwall Vintage Series was back for the second straight week and not much changed at the front of the field.
Jason Powers started on the pole after winning his heat earlier in the night and was looking for back to back series wins. Powers held the lead in the first eight laps of the 15 lap event with Steve Lackie, Dave Wilgosh, Steve Arbuthnot and Brandon Gregory rounded out the top five.
Wilgosh had a great car towards the end of the race and quickly made his way to the back bumper of Powers and battle for the top spot was on.
The yellow flew for Jeremiah Stephenson, who spun on Lap 14, setting up a one lap shootout.
On the restart Powers didn’t get a great start as Wilgosh made a bid for the lead as the field entered Turn 1. Powers was able to get away down the backstretch as Wilgosh attempted to fight back.
However Powers remained strong up front, and held on for his second series win in a row. Wilgosh settled for second with Steve Arbuthnot, Steve Lackie and Brandon Gregory completing the top five.
Next week, the first ever Patriot/SOS/CAOSS co-sanctioned Sprint Car event will take place along with a full show in all five divisions with Tallman Truck Center being the night’s sponsor. The green flag flies at 7pm.
