ACTON, ON- With victories in his last 4 Mini Stock division appearances, Brandon McFerran hopes to retain his spot as one of Ontario’s hottest short track stars in a pair of events this weekend.
The 15-year old is slated for weekly competition at Sunset Speedway – where McFerran currently leads the way in the Mini Stock championship point standings – on Saturday, before heading to Kawartha Speedway for the second and final round of the Mini Stock Nationals on Sunday.
“This is a big weekend for our team”, explains McFerran. “Sunset is our priority, we’re working hard to win our first career championship there. But, we really want to bring home a Mini Stock Nationals trophy too”
“You could say we’re pretty motivated right now”, adds the high-school student with his trademark smile.
The third-generation racer is in the midst of a career year, having tallied 8 victories through the first three and a half months of the season.
“We worked our guts out all Winter to prepare for this”, says McFerran. “A championship run was always the goal, but we could have never imagined it happening like this. I’ve never won this many races in anything. Every time I get to victory lane it feels like a dream”
“So much of our success this year is thanks to my Dad [Ron McFerran] and Tim Ellas”, continues McFerran. “The work they do behind the scenes is incredible. There haven’t been many nights this year where I’ve had to fight this car. We take pride in having one of the best prepared programs in the pit area, and that’s thanks to those two”
McFerran’s entry into the second round of the Mini Stock Nationals will provide the Acton, ON driver with his second career trip to Kawartha Speedway.
“That track is a monster, man”, exclaims McFerran with a smile. “Kawartha is definitely one of my new favourites. You are absolutely flying around that place in one of these cars. I had never even seen it before the first round of the Nationals. My first practice laps I didn’t really know where the quick way around was, but I picked it up in a hurry”
“Kawartha drew an awesome field when we were there in June, and I don’t expect anything less this time. It would be an honour to park this car in victory lane on Sunday, but I know how much work is ahead of us for that to happen. The best of the best will be there”
