HAMILTON, ON- Former OSCAAR Modified Tour race winner Terry Baker will be in the field when the tour returns to Sunset Speedway on Saturday night. Baker, a former Pro-4 Modified standout, earned a 4th place finish in his lone tour appearance this season at Delaware in early July.
“As fast as this car has been, I think we might be able to play a factor on Saturday night,” says the likeable open-wheel veteran. “The OSCAAR guys are so tough. It’s a tall order to get anywhere near the front of the field, but we’re going to give it everything we’ve got. It’s been a long time since we’ve had this car in victory lane, and I would love to get the job done at Sunset”
A longtime Flamboro Speedway regular, Baker admits Sunset took some getting used to prior to earning a tour victory at the Innisfil, ON oval last June.
“It’s a tricky bullring. That’s the best way to describe it,” says Baker of Sunset. “It will try to draw you into overdriving it. Each corner is completely different. The entry and exit at each end of the racetrack has to be attacked in a separate way. If you lose sight of that, you can get lost and end up giving up some pretty valuable track position”
With a rapidly growing business and a young family, Baker’s time behind the wheel of a racecar has been limited as of late. However, the Hamilton, ON native intends on making good use of every opportunity he has to strap in against some of Ontario’s best.
“I don’t get to race nearly as much as I would like to, so I try to make every outing count as much as possible,” smiles the veteran. “We drove from 12th to 4th at Delaware and I think I smiled about it for two weeks straight. I just love the sport – even though I can’t dedicate the time to it that I once could”
“The [Baker Performance of Hamilton] shop has been over the top busy over the last couple months, but now that the summer is winding down I think we’ll have a better chance at squeezing in some more racing,” continues Baker. “The OSCAAR schedule is starting to pick up now, and I hope we can run with them some more before the end of the season. Naturally, if we have a good run on Saturday there’s a pretty good chance we’ll be back sooner rather than later.”
