ST. JOHN’S (September 10, 2017) – The 16th annual Targa Newfoundland kicked off Sunday with 33 teams entered for what is expected to be an exciting six days of competition.
A strong field from seven countries are competing in the annual tarmac rally. The Targa will cover over 1,500 kilometres through the Avalon, Bonavista, and Burin Peninsulas, over the coming days.
Several last minute entries from local competitors have made a couple of divisions more packed. Josh Collins of Placentia who competes in national, regional, and local stock car series fame and recent Targa Bambina winner Andrew Warren of Marystown have tossed their hats into the Targa ring with hopes of winning the event or enjoying themselves in the non-competitive Fast Tour division.
Practice stages in Flatrock and Bauline on Sunday were successful for all teams, with no incidents reported and all crews returning to the paddock in the early evening. Many locals also took in the car shows at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay over the weekend, with many impressed by the different types of vehicles covering several classes within the field.
The event will move their overnight location to Clarenville starting Monday and set up at the Eastlink Events Centre, with a majority of the action moving to the northern Burin and Clarenville areas of the province. Stages are scheduled for Black River, Garden Cove, North Harbour, North West Brook and Hodges Cove.
Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. The 2017 competition will start in St. John’s on September 10th and concludes back in the capital on September 15th. The annual rally will cover more than 1,500 kilometres of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of Newfoundland, including over 430 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.
