INNISFIL, ON – Guelph, ON, up-and-comer Mike ‘Lights Out’ Bentley captured his second feature win of 2012 in Sunset Speedway’s marquee Limited Late Model division on June 23. The go-karting graduate took over the lead from veteran Ernie Fumerton in the race’s early-goings, and was dogged by multi-time division champion Chris Morrow for much of the event’s first half. Engine problems for Morrow on lap 13 would result in a lengthy clean-up, and when action resumed it was Jason Witty pressuring Bentley for the lead. Witty’s attempts would intensify during a number of late-race restarts, though Bentley held the lead flawlessly, crossing the stripe for his second win in three weekly outings. Kevin Cornelius would make a late race pass for second, followed by Witty, Stompin’ Tom Walters and Sean Cronan.
In Super Stock action, Baden, ON, veteran Nick Roth broke through for his first career Sunset feature victory. The 2011 Flamboro Speedway Frost Fest champion put his renowned smooth style of driving on display, capturing – and later defending – the lead from former champion Paul Maltese. Maltese would settle for second, followed by point-leader Herb Walters, defending track champion Lane Zardo and Matt Bentley.
Eric Yorke would find victory lane in the Mini Stock division for the third time this season. The Milton, ON, product would strip Rory Collett of the lead late in the 25-lap affair, after a lapped car washed up in front of Collett, allowing Yorke to sneak by on the outside. The win would increase Yorke’s point lead to a whopping 55 points just 5 races into the 2012 season.
