@sswracing • HALIFAX, NS – The 22nd edition of the Shriner’s Classic for the Affordable Fuels & Metro Home Heating Sportsman is set for Friday night at Scotia Speedworld. In addition to the 50 lap Sportsman feature fans will also see racing action from the Hydraulics Plus Bandoleros, Coors Light Trucks and the Toursec Thunder & Lightning cars. Racing action will get underway at 7:00 PM.

The Shriner’s Classic is the longest active running race in consecutive years in Atlantic Canada with its 22nd edition taking place this Friday. The first annual Shriner’s Classic was held in 1995 as a Street Stock race and was later transferred to the Sportsman class when the Street Stock division was dissolved.

Many of the region’s short track stars have won the prestigious race, however every driver who has competed this season in the Affordable Fuels Sportsman class at Scotia Speedworld is missing a Shriners Classic on their racing resume. While former event winners are still active within the region, this could be the second consecutive year the event sees a new champion after Russell Smith Jr. (Lakeside) won the event in 2015 for the first time.

Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) has raced to five podium finishes in the first five races this season and leads the Affordable Fuels Sportsman division into battle Friday as the point leader. 2012 Affordable Fuels Sportsman titlist Aaron Boutiler (Porter’s Lake) sits second in the championship chase, 13 points out of the top spot. Pete Miller (Kennetcook) and Matt Moore (Falmouth), fresh off winning the last two races in the class, sit within striking distance.

Brentley Pirri (Three Fathom Harbour) is fifth in the standings after finishing second last Friday night at Scotia Speedworld. He knows the gravity of the Shriners Classic and hopes to win his first Sportsman race in the prestigious event on Canada Day. “It’s a huge race,” said Pirri in victory lane last week. “It means so much to everyone at this race track and it carries so much history. We’re going to bring our “A Game” on Friday, but we know everyone else will be too.”
