PLATTSVILLE, ON- Current APC United Late Model Series points leader Shawn Chenoweth will look to extend his tour win streak to three races – and further cement his place as a contender for the inaugural series championship – when Sunset Speedway plays host to Round 7 of the 2015 schedule on Sunday, August 23rd.
‘The Mastodon’ has competed in a bevy of different divisions at the Innisfil, ON oval, but has yet to visit victory lane at the newly redesigned .333 mile facility.
“I approach Sunset a little differently than any other speedway, because I’ve never won there in anything before,” admits Chenoweth. “I wouldn’t say that we’re desperate to get to victory lane there. But, the track certainly has my attention in a way that no other speedway does right now. I want to knock it off our list in a big way”
Chenoweth last competed with the tour in Round 5 at Peterborough Speedway on July 18th, turning in a stifling performance, leading every lap for his second straight series win. Round 6 at Sauble would be lost due to rain on August 2nd, giving the tour an extended layoff ahead of the final two rounds of its inaugural season.
“I think this Sunday might be the most difficult race to win all year,” muses the second-generation racer. “An entire month off has given the whole tour a little bit of a shakeup”
“The guys that have been having rough luck have had a whole month to get their stuff back together and the guys that were already tough to beat have had a whole month to make their programs better,” continues the veteran. “No matter what way you look at it – everyone will have stepped their game up from the last time we saw them”
Despite entering the 100-lap event as one of the most talked about competitors in the province, Chenoweth insists his current outlook is no different than it has been all season long.
“I’m not feeling any added pressure to win this race just because we’ve won our last two,” shrugs the personable standout. “The streak is irrelevant. No matter how many races we’ve won, my job is to come out and turn in my best possible performance”
“We’ve led laps in four of the five tour races we’ve run this season – we just need to keep doing the same thing that’s been working. If we can do that, everything else will sort itself out”
Since partnering with Mike Schmidt’s London Recreational Racing, Chenoweth has seen his program reach new heights, and explains that his team grows more confident with each passing week.
“We believe that we have the best team on this tour,” says Chenoweth. “And every time we can roll out of the trailer and perform to our expectations, that belief gets a little bit stronger. We’re coming down the stretch now, and we have every tool necessary to win this championship. We just want to make the right decisions, lock this thing up and meet everyone at the banquet.”
