INNISFIL, ON- In his first Super Late Model race in two years, Shawn Chenoweth showed no signs of rust. ‘The Mastodon’ appeared composed and comfortable, racing within the top-5 for the entirety of Sunset Speedway’s Velocity 250, in a compelling return to the upper echelon of Ontario short track racing.
“We were definitely pleased with the way our car responded”, explained Chenoweth post-race. “I mean, when you look around at the guys we’re racing with, how could you be pleased with a top-5?”
“There’s still a long way to go though”, continued Chenoweth. “This car is a phenomenal piece, and I know that with a few more hours in the shop, there’s a lot more we can get out of it for Peterborough in a couple weeks”
For Chenoweth, the event marked his first top-5 under the OSCAAR banner since July 2012, and displayed just how much of an impact the former Pro Late Model champion could have on the tour.
“It felt like we’d never left the tour”, said Chenoweth. “There were a few new faces at the front of the field, but other than that everything else was the same. This is the best car I’ve ever driven in a Super Late Model event, and I think we have a chance to really do something with it in 2015”
“I said coming into this race that I wanted to be in the conversation, and we were. This is a good base to start with. I’m happy with a top-5 for now, but the work is just beginning”
When asked his goals for his re-invented Super Late Model operation, Chenoweth is sure not to mince words.
“We’re here to win a championship. That’s the end-game for us. We’re going to sit in the shop and work on this car until it’s good enough to win races. And then we’re going to keep working on it until it’s good enough to win a championship”
“The OSCAAR tour has some of the best drivers in the province”, explained Chenoweth. “We’re confident we can run with them, and we know that with some long hours and some hard work, we can beat them”
Chenoweth will return to competition with the OSCAAR Super Late Model tour at Peterborough Speedway’s Autumn Colours Classic on October 10th, 11th and 12th.
Shawn Chenoweth’s 2014 program is fueled by London Recreational, Bennett GM, KR Communications, Midas of Orangeville, Castrol Edge, Transaxle Truck Parts, Hitman Hotrods, Wilson Ponds, Graybar, McColl Racing Enterprises, Innerkip Plumbing and Heating, ProWraps and Automotive Truck & Tire.
