NORTH MIAMI, FL- With the sting of a DNF in the opening round of the OSCAAR Super Late Model season behind him, rookie Sean Grosman is set to return to Sunset Speedway for his second appearance with the cross-province tour.
‘The Frequent Flyer’s first start behind the wheel of a Super Late Model, at Sunset’s Spring Velocity on May 17th, ended unceremoniously after mid-race contact sent his damaged No. 29 careening through the speedway’s infield grass just one day after Grosman had turned heads in heat race action to solidify ‘top qualifier’ honours for the 50-lap main event.
Now, after weeks of preparation, Grosman is prepared to take another swing at his former home track on June 6th.
“If we could find a little bit of luck this weekend, I think we’ll be alright,” shrugs Grosman with an air of calm that he’s become known for in racing circles. “This car blew me away in Round 1 – it’s without question the nicest piece I’ve ever owned”
“Being top qualifier was a great boost of confidence – but we came to Sunset to win. The DNF was a big disappointment. It’s my intention to make up for that this weekend”
Though Grosman is comfortable in his own abilities behind the wheel of his Finish Line Fabrication chassis, the former road course standout is well aware of the variables that lie beyond his reach.
“As good as our car has been there are only so many aspects of our night that we can control,” explains the Florida native. “We have, what I would refer to as, guarded optimism. We know our car is capable of running up front. We’re just going to do all that we can to stay out of other people’s messes and be in the mix when the laps begin to matter”
Crew Chief Ryan Kimball has worked extensively on the team’s lone chassis in the weeks following the season opener – a fact that comes as no surprise to Grosman.
“I don’t think it matters how fast the car is – it’s not going to keep Ryan from working on it,” says Grosman. “Every time we speak, it seems as though he’s found a new way to make us quicker. He’s put his heart and soul into our program, and I can’t possibly thank him enough”
“My only complaint with the cars handling had been a tight condition that we’d been fighting – so Ryan’s dedicated the better part of two weeks to find a way around that”
“He’s confident that he’s fixed the problem – so our setup is a tick different than what we had in Round 1. I’m incredibly excited to try it out”
When asked if his team can match this early-season work rate for the entirety of the OSCAAR schedule, Grosman matter-of-factly explains that the hours spent in developing new ideas are necessary to compete with the talent-laden roster.
“This kind of brainstorming is what we’re prepared to do all season. Every driver on the roster is so evenly matched that you have to always be thinking about ways to get faster. On this tour, if you aren’t getting better – you’re getting worse. Because there’s always going to be someone willing to work harder than you if you let them.”
Sean Grosman’s 2015 OSCAAR Super Late Model Rookie of the Year effort is supported by For Your Eyes Only of Toronto, The Landing Strip Gentleman’s Club of Toronto, Flagship Properties, SL Promotions and Rylex Glass & Mirror.
