TIVERTON, ON- 2-time Sauble Speedway Ltd. Late Model champion Scott McTeer will return to ‘the Beach’ in 2014, eager to defend his division title against a rapidly growing list of contenders.
The veteran has had his eye on the calendar for weeks, anxiously counting down the days to Sauble’s season opener on May 17th.
“We’re can’t wait to get to the speedway and get rolling”, explains McTeer in a recent visit to the champion’s Tiverton-area shop. “Our whole team has worked pretty tirelessly on this car to get it ready. The last few weeks before the season starts are the worst, because it feels as though time stands still”
The former Thunder Car standout controlled much of the 2013 campaign, notching an incredible 7 feature wins en route to his second straight Ltd. Late Model division championship.
“I’m not sure what more I can say about this team and the success we’ve had the last 2 seasons”, offers the oft-humble McTeer. “It just a great group of people working towards a common goal. Every time I say we had a dream season, we come out and put together an even better one. I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded with the people I am”
After years spent as somewhat of a niche market, Sauble’s headline division has very quickly rose to prominence and is now considered one of the best in Ontario.
“I think people underestimated the Sauble Ltd. Late Models for a long time”, says McTeer. “I’m happy that the entire roster is now getting the respect it deserves. We have a lot of incredibly talented drivers. I’ve had the pleasure of competing at quite a few speedways, and I think Sauble is as tough to win at as any”
When asked his strategy for his third-straight championship, McTeer is quick to brush off the notion.
“We don’t really pay strategy much mind, to be honest. I just go out and try and win every week and let the points take care of themselves. The best strategy to remind yourself of is not to let your emotions get the best of you. Because, when you’re on top, everyone is lining up to try and knock you off. That’s the nature of the sport. So, we’ll go out every Saturday, have a great time, try our absolute best and see if we can’t win a third straight championship”
