STROUD, ON (August 31, 2017)- After a wreck late in the first feature, a big gesture from a fellow competitor paid off in the form of a top-five for Rick Spencer-Walt at Sunset Speedway on Saturday night.
Starting the first feature in eighth, he would avoid a wreck on the third lap to move up to sixth. From there, he got fifth on the restart, followed by getting alongside Chris Morrow for fourth at Lap 7, completing the pass five laps later. He’d remain there till 12 laps to go, when he fell back to the fourth position, once again.
Ahead of him, the top-three competitors traded positions as he ran closely behind him. Everything came to a head with two laps to go, with contact happening between the top-two. They’d catch Spencer-Walt in the process, causing him to hit the turn one wall.
The damage was severe enough to not be repairable for the second feature later on that night. Fortunately, Al Inglis offered up his car for the second 35-lapper.
Starting tail on the field, Spencer-Walt began to make his way forward from the drop of the green flag, running 11th as of the first caution with 30 laps to go. He’d continue to move forward, moving up to sixth by the halfway mark. Spencer-Walt then got alongside Chris Morrow for fifth at Lap 19, completing the pass four laps later. The climb continued for Spencer-Walt as he’d got alongside Paul Maltese for fourth with seven laps to go, completing the pass a lap later.
He would catch Nick Goetz for third and get alongside him, though was unable to complete the pass before the checkered flag flew, crossing the finish line in fourth.
Special thanks to Al Inglis and his team for offering the car to run the second feature on the night. Certainly a class act move on his part.
The top-fives continue to add to this season’s results, though, marking 11 podium finishes in 23 features this season. Notably, the team has now posted seven top-four finishes in the last eight features at Sunset Speedway.
Spencer-Walt will be back in action on Saturday, September 2 as just three nights remain on the schedule. It is a fan appreciation night, with an autograph session scheduled at intermission, so be sure to come on out and say hello.
