Don’t kid yourself. Just because it’s smaller the Evoque is built and performs with the same DNA as its bigger brother Range Rovers.
Assembled in JCL’s Halewood, UK facility, the new Evoque has received some performance and luxury upgrades and tweaks since it was introduced in 2011. As with all vehicles in the Range Rover line, the Evoque provides refined and luxurious travel and when called upon, stout and capable off-roading.
Tested here is the Range Rover Evoque P300 R-Dynamic HSE model, the highest on the food chain, loaded with convenience, performance, and high-tech options, and a price of over $70,000. But the base S model can be had for about $50,000 and it offers the same ride and off-road characteristics.
LIKES
The Evoque provides sprightly acceleration, has excellent braking power, and corners well for an SUV. Off-roading capabilities are excellent which is a shame as it will probably never be used to its potential.
WHAT’S BEST
The Evoque is assembled with the same quality JCL fit and finish inside and out. The test vehicle had excellent brakes and rode well considering its short wheelbase. The sight lines were adequate and the view out the rear was much better with the rear headrests folded down.
WHAT’S WORST
The interior is fine for two people but it’s a tight fit for rear seat passengers. Front entry and exit can be awkward for tall people as the front seats sit behind the rear door pillar.
OVERALL
The Evoque is an small upscale SUV with the excellent off-road capabilities that is a Range Rover hallmark. Most functions are operated with the two centrally-located touch screens, and their use is easier than in past versions. With its fashion-statement style, the Evoque is refined with attention to detail, demonstrating that good things can come in small packages.
