Genesis has ramped up its sports sedan lineup with a wide array of trim and powertrain offerings in the G70, and while the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder variant does not have the power of the 3.3 twin turbo available, it can certainly hold its own with British, Japanese and German makes of the same class.

Coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox, and offered in rear-drive only, this version offers the opportunity for spirited driving in a solid, luxurious package. The tester was unique with its dark chrome accents, black wheels, quilted door panels, and Nappa leather seats.

LIKES
A willing engine with enough power to fully enjoy the rear wheel power, a very smooth-shifting transmission, well-thought out driver control functions, and a spacious interior. The car provides a nice exhaust note in the upper rev ranges. There is a large amount of data available through the car’s info system.

WHAT’S BEST
Running the G70 through the gears is a delight, and as it is a little lighter than the V6 models, provides better handling in the traditional rear-drive setup. The car is also well-equipped and much less money than its counterparts. Genesis offers a five year/100,000 km complimentary maintenance package and limited warranty.

WHAT’S WORST
For the Canadian climate, ice and snow is difficult to remove from the windshield wipers. There is some distortion when looking out the rear window from the rear-view mirror, and while shifting is smooth and precise, the action was hampered a bit as the driver’s elbow would smack into the center console.

OVERALL
Genesis should be applauded for offering so much in a car for such a price. It checks off all the boxes for a sporty yet practical sedan. Others agree as the car was named Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit for 2019. The model tested is the only one of six versions to offer rear-wheel drive. All others, whether it’s the four or six-cylinder engines, come standard in all-wheel drive and with an eight-speed automatic.
