Maserati’s entry into the high-end performance sedan segment is the Quattroporte, a large four-door sedan which is available in four versions, the S, the S Q4, the GranLusso, and GranSport, with prices ranging from $123,100 to $155,100.
The car is available in two or all-wheel drive and offers a choice of Ferrari-sourced V6 or V8 engines.
While the base version provides comfortable high-speed motoring in the grand tradition, performance options in the more expensive models continue to offer comfort along with enhancing the performance characteristics of this large car.
LIKES
The Quattroporte is a big two-ton sedan but the size does not inhibit spirited driving. The V6 is more than adequate in performance. And you get this performance while sitting on sumptuous leather in a cabin designed and fitted for lots of high-speed touring.
WHAT’S BEST
Maserati makes extensive use of aluminum for body panels and suspension parts to keep down the car’s weight. This metal, along with electronically controlled Skyhook adaptive shock absorbers which act independently of each other, and a five-link rear suspension, help provide comfort and performance. The Quattroporte also boasts 50-50 weight distribution and large Brembo brakes to enhance driving. The car’s interior is sumptuous and large, with controls well placed. Along with an 8.4-inch infotainment screen, many functions are carried out using buttons and switch gear rather than punching the display screen. Sightlines are good and the interior is large enough for four adults to cruise in comfort.
WHAT’S WORST
The shifting paddles are quite easy to use, but are too large, making other column-mounted tasks awkward. The starter/ignition button is on the left side of the steering column which takes some getting used to. And the Quattroporte has a midget sunroof with a manually operated shade, not what one would expect of a car in this price class.
OVERALL
The Quattroporte certainly delivers a complete package of performance and ride in a lounge-like interior. The car offers sensual styling and composed handling. Maserati’s flagship since 1963, the newest Quattroporte continues to be graceful in style, performance, and character in true Italian fashion.
