Saskatoon, SK- It has long been rumoured that racing helmets cut off oxygen to the brain and several racers tried their best to prove that theory correct Saturday at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. At one point during the WSSL Auto Parts Plus 150 race fans wondered if the demolition derby had started a week early.
The most spectacular wreck took place only three laps into to the 150 lap race and left a tangled mess of steel and fibreglass piled on top of each other on the front straight. It took the two tow trucks over 25 minutes to pull the mess apart. Seven cars took damage, five done for the night.
It all started when the #22 of Doug Bienia and the #62 of Kenny Heintz brought out the caution in corner one. First time to the Saskatoon track, seeing the caution coming out of corner four, Barry Schingar of Cranbrook in the #3 hit the brakes hard. Aaron Dowler from Fort Saskatchewan went into him with the #4, spinning and collecting the #55 of Jim Gaunt. In comes the #56 of Howard Crossman, driving over top of the first three cars, parking himself on top of the three cars.
The #77 of Greg Vangool was involved in a tangle somewhere as well as his car displayed more than love tap damage to the front end. The 3, 4, 22, 55 and 56 were all dropped in their pits where they sat for the night. The #77 had a quick stop in his pit and the #62 did get back into the race a couple of laps after the return to green flag.
The most impressive and most improved driver was the #0 of Tony Lambert who led 87 of the 150 laps. Unfortunately his night came to a hard end in lap 100 while leading the race. He came up on the broken #14 of Glen Hertzke sitting high against the wall coming out of corner four bringing out the caution, but not soon enough as Lambert had to slow quickly coming out of four. The #77 of Vangool hit Lambert, spinning him and slamming him hard into the wall backwards. MD Ambulance made its second trip onto the track to clear him before being helped from his car and
the tow trucks left to figure out how best to get what remained of his car back into the pits.
The WSSL Auto Parts 150 started with #38 Dave Bone on the outside pole, charging into the lead in lap one. Still on the pole for the restart after the caution that saw the five cars retired from the race, Tony Lambert jumped into the lead with the #0. Glen Hertzke repeated with the #14 in lap 32, taking the lead coming out of caution, but only hanging on for six laps before Lambert moved back around him.
Same move in lap 73 as Trent Seidel took the jump with the #70 coming out of caution, but that was short lived as Lambert took the lead back two laps later. Lambert would hang onto the lead until he crashed out in lap 100.
That left the #00 of Denver Foran to inherit the lead, which he would not give up even through one more caution. Foran crossed the finish line for the WSSL Auto Parts Plus 150 checkered flag and the Dakota Dunes Western Canada Super Late Model Championship Series trophy. Trent Seidel followed for 2nd in the #70 and #69 PJ Kondra for third. Only one-half the field finished the race with only five cars on the lead lap.
Besides the checkered flag and the trophy, Denver Foran took home a bonus $1500 on top of the $1850 first place prize as he took the challenge and started the race at the back of the field after qualifying fastest. #5 Ryan Wells also took the challenge, but left the race with mechanical issues after 68 laps.
