HEPWORTH, ON- Second-generation star Andrew Gresel has dominated the 2014 OSCAAR Super Late Model tour. The former Pro Late Model champion currently leads the tour points with only two events remaining, and has tallied 4 wins at 3 different speedways this season.
September 27th and 28th will bring Gresel back to Sunset Speedway for the penultimate event on the OSCAAR schedule, with the Sauble Falls Racing representative hoping to earn his first career Sunset Speedway Super Late Model win.
“Sunset has been our Achilles heel for a while now”, admits Gresel. “No matter what combinations we seem to try, we just can’t get the car to agree with the track. We were close in August – but even then the car faded a lot more than we had anticipated”
That event – August 23rd’s Bruce Gowland Memorial – saw the Hepworth, ON star wage a near race-long battle with fellow tour heavyweight Dwayne Baker, eventually coming home with a hard-fought runner-up finish.
“The Gowland Memorial proved to our team that we can run up front here”, continues Gresel. “We just need to make the last few adjustments necessary to get us over the top”
“I feel as though our lack of experience has us playing catch-up”, says Gresel. “It makes perfect sense that the guys that do well here are the ones with the most laps on the track. We just need to close that gap and use our track time to the best of our ability. If we make smart choices, our strategy can make up for a lack of track time”
Despite a relatively healthy lead in the point standings, Gresel is quick to note he has no interest in playing a conservative strategy.
“I’ve already told my guys that I don’t even want to hear what the point difference is”, explains Gresel. “We’re going to unload this weekend and race to win. It doesn’t matter what the points say. I’m going to race like I’m 100 points behind. Our sponsors partnered with us because they want to see us race. So, we’re going to come out and give the people a show. The fans don’t want to see a driver go out and try to protect a points lead. They want to see drivers race for the win”
