COLDWATER, ON- Barrie Speedway Thunder Car Rookie of the Year Jordan Latimer is ready for his third career Sunset Speedway Super Stock start this weekend. The event, a 50-lap invitational expected to draw competition from across the province, will mark Latimer’s first career appearance at the speedway’s Crown Jewel ‘Velocity 250’ weekend.
“Any time you have a weekend as big as this, it’s hard not to get excited”, smiles the third-generation star. “I love being at the speedway. Any speedway. But, when you throw in a huge field and a packed grandstand full of race fans, it’s the best atmosphere anywhere”
Latimer turned heads at Barrie Speedway this season, earning a feature victory and a litany of podium finishes to capture the track’s Rookie of the Year title, in addition to finishing 2nd in Thunder Car division points.
“We blew right past any expectations that we had for this season”, admits Latimer. “Coming into this year, finishing top-5 in the points would have been a best case scenario. To finish up with our first ever win was just incredible”
“No matter how we do during the Playoff Season, there’s no way I won’t be looking at 2014 as a huge success”, says Latimer.
This weekend will see Latimer represent his Ridge Road Racing team in the Super Stock event. Teammate Gord Shepherd will be competing with the Ltd. Late Models, and Latimer is quick to note he’ll likely be turning to ‘The Smoke’ for advice throughout the weekend.
“Having Gord with us this weekend is going to be a huge help”, says Latimer. “This whole team has been amazing all year. They’re learning my style, just as much as I’m learning how to drive the car. Gord has a lot more laps around Sunset than I do, so knowing that I can turn to him for some advice is a huge weight off my mind”
“We had a great car when we were at Sunset in July”, continues Latimer, “and hopefully we can just build on that this weekend. There’s going to be a tonne of fast cars there, so we’re just going to focus on qualifying for the show and go from there”
