Spencer Lewis’ Ontario Short Track Notebook for March 8, 2013: Second-generation Limited Late Model standout Darin Malcolm has announced his intentions to return to Barrie Speedway competition in 2013. The former Autumn Colours Classic champion hopes to compete in at least 10 events at the speedway that saw him capture Rookie of the Year honors in 1997. The 38-year old last competed fulltime at Barrie in 2005, in a season that saw him compile 5 victories in 20 starts.
Malcolm joins Gord Shepherd and Al Inglis in the growing list of drivers that have committed to Barrie for 2013. His efforts will be supported by Exteriors MD, DS Contracting & A. Greenwood Home Inspections of North Bay.

2012 Sunset Speedway Super Stock champion Randy ‘The Rocket’ Rusnell (above) has confirmed his return to the Stroud, ON oval for a 2013 title defense. The Cambridge, ON-based veteran captured both the weekly championship in addition to Sunset’s 4-race MRE Pro Series crown in 2012. Rusnell’s 2012 season was highlighted by a multitude of 30-lap conquests on Saturday nights, in addition to a torrent of extended distance victories that included a pair of 50-lap MRE Pro Series wins, a Sauble Speedway Dash for Cash triumph and a dominating performance at Sunset’s crown jewel end-of-season Velocity event.
‘The Rocket’ will enter the season in search of his 6th weekly championship in 7 seasons, after capturing 4-straight titles at Flamboro Speedway before debuting at Sunset in 2011. Rusnell’s 2013 season will carry marketing support from McCordick Glove and Safety, Spira Fire Protection, Truck Trans Inc., Dream Devon Rex Cats, Marvin Freiburger & Sons Truck Repair, Thor Contracting and Cournoyea’s Poodles.
TOM WALTERS: Shortly after accepting his plaque as the #1 ranked short track driver in the province for 2012 at February’s Canadian Motorsports Expo, Stompin’ Tom Walters (above) has launched a brand new website for the upcoming season. BOBBY TOLTON: The sophomore OSCAAR Modified tour has announced second-generation wheelman Bobby Tolton will join the series’ ranks in 2013, eager to challenge for the coveted Rookie of the Year crown. The Guelph, ON driver will bring 7 seasons worth of Mini Stock and Limited Late Model experience with him when he straps into a ‘ground pounder’ for the first time. Tolton will campaign a chassis formerly piloted by OSCAAR Modified regular and Varney Motor Speedway veteran Monty Kelly. The team will carry marketing support from Engines from Hal, Amsoil, California Dave’s Complete Autobody, At A Glance Screenprinting and Eloquip.
