PORT ELGIN, ON – Sauble Speedway sophomore Nick Goetz is putting the final preparations into a Limited Late Model that will log more than its fair share of laps this Canada Day long weekend.
‘Livewire’ will compete in Saturday night’s event at Sauble Speedway, pitting the Sauble regulars against a visiting mob of Sunset Speedway drivers in the first ever ‘Sauble vs. Sunset Home and Home Series’ event. The team will then pack up and make the 4-hour drive to Peterborough Speedway, where Goetz will make his second career start at the tricky 1/3 mile oval.
“I look forward to weekends like this”, beamed Goetz at a recent testing session. “Seat time is so valuable when you’re competing at this level, and I realize that racing against the best is only going to help me improve”
Goetz will rely on his Sauble experience to outfox the Sunset visitors, many of whom have gone seasons without turning a lap at the Owen Sound-area speedplant.
“Sauble is not an easy place to get around. It takes a lot of laps to put a decent line together. I’ve been a weekly competitor there for a season and a half, I feel that’ll give me an advantage over drivers that are trying to learn the track in a single night”
The second-year driver is hoping for an incident-free Saturday night, as he looks toward the 75-lap ‘Chase for the Colours’ event, and the front-row starting position at the 21st Autumn Colours Classic that will be awarded to the top-two finishers.
“The Autumn Colours Classic is what every Ontario short track competitor works towards all season long”, explains Goetz. “A front-row starting position would be huge for us. A guaranteed starting spot would eliminate a lot of variables. I know we’re going to have to work for it, but my team and I are ready”
