PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO…Steven Petty offers a look back at the September 15 racing action from New Humberstone Speedway.
Gary Lindberg was on cruise control after grabbing the lead on lap 25 of the scheduled 100 lap distance for the Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman as Motorsports Image and Mike Knapp Ford night at New Humberstone Speedway on Don “Gramps” Ledingham Memorial night.
However, Mother Nature intervened on lap 30 forcing Speedway management to call off the remaining 70 laps and calling it a wash out. Lee Winger from Caledonia, Ontario won his fourth JC Auto Street Stock feature of the season while James Thompson claimed the points title. Kyle Pelrine from Beamsville, Ontario claimed his second win of the season in the Trackside Decals Mini Stocks and picked up his third track Championship. Craig Vlasic from Welland, Ontario claimed his first victory of the season while Mike Toovey won his second straight track Championship. Sam Iftody from Fenwick, Ontario nailed his tenth Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks feature of the 2013 season and won the points title. In rained out action from September 1, Sam Iftody from Fenwick, Ontario claimed his ninth Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks feature of the season while Colton Ledingham from Port Colborne, Ontario won in the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks.
Greg Panunte and Paul Williamson led the Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman to the green flag for the Safecracker 100 with Panunte leading the opening lap with Cody McPherson racing in second. McPherson would take the race lead on lap two with Panunte, Austin Wood, Williamson and Adam Leslie to complete the top five.
The leaders hit heavy lap traffic with just seven laps completed as Jordan Cosco, James Michael Friesen and Gary Lindberg all battled and passed Williamson to move into the top ten on lap 10. McPherson and Panunte pulled away from Wood, Leslie and Lindberg as the leaders continued to work their way through lap traffic. Lindberg would continue to dice his way through the field as the 2013 Champion went to the outside of both Leslie and Wood to move into third place.
Panunte was able to reel in leader McPherson and went underneath the 2012 Mr DIRTcar Sportsman Champion but McPherson closed the door on lap 22. Gary Lindberg drove around both Panunte and McPherson to get the lead on lap 25 just as Mother Nature began to come down. The caution would come out for the first time on lap 27 for precipitation. Speedway management called the rest of the race as a washout due to the race only completing 30 laps, 20 shy of the halfway distance.
Shawn Wilson and Cory Turner led the JC Auto Street Stocks to the green flag with Wilson jumping out into the lead. Off an lap one restart, Lee Winger jumped into the race lead on lap three as Paul Reichel and James Thompson raced for third with Jason Fontaine and Cory Turner right behind them. Thompson and Turner’s race for fifth place was for the track championship as Turner tried everything to get around Thompson as Dave Small passed Turner and went after Thompson. Paul Reichel took over second from Wilson as Fontaine raced his way into third with five to go. Fontaine passed Reichel for second late in the event. Lee Winger would drive to his fourth win of the season. Thompson would edge out Turner to claim the track title
Evan Curtis and Kyle Pelrine led the Trackside Decals Mini Stocks to the green flag for their Championship event and it was Pelrine jumping into the lead. Curtis looked underneath Pelrine but Pelrine, the champion at Merrittville for 2013 slammed the door shut. Curtis used a lap car as a pick on lap seven but Pelrine kept the lead at the cross flags. The battle for third shaped up to be a battle “for the ages” between Kyle Rothwell, Tyler Lafantaisie and Leroy Buscumb for most of the 15 lap distance. But up front, Pelrine continued to hold off all of Curtis’s challenges to get the win and the track championship. Buscumb out-raced Tyler Lafantaisie and Kyle Rothwell to get third.
Craig Vlasic and Taylor Vanderzanden led the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks to the green flag for their 15 lap season finale and it was Vlasic showing the way early. Vlasic pulled away from Vanderzanden with Greg Haegens, Colton Ledingham and Sam Pennacchio in the top five at the cross flags. Greg Haegens challenged Vanderzanden as Vanderzanden went underneath Vlasic for the lead but Vlasic was too strong. Vlasic would hold off Greg Haegens and Vanderzanden for his first win of the season. Mike Toovey collected his second straight track championships in the division.
Brad Alward and Kyle Tomaski led the Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks for their final points race and it was Sam Iftody jumping into the lead on the outside of turn two on the opening circuit. Tomaski brought out the caution on lap three and Iftody pulled away from Marcel Beauregard on the restart. Beauregard went after Iftody but Beauregard got loose and lost several positions. Iftody pulled away and picked up his tenth win of the season.
In action from the rained out evening of September 1st, the Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks hit the speedway and it was Brad Booker and Sam Iftody leading the field to the green flag and it was Iftody jumping out into the early lead. Off a early lap restart, Kyle Tomaski jumped into second right behind Iftody as Olivier Larocque raced his way into third. Iftody was able to hold off Tomaski and Brad Alward to pick up his ninth win of the season.
Jamie Ayers and Andy Imbeault led the Pro 4 Trucks to the green flag for their make-up feature event and it was Imbeault jumping out to a large lead over Colton Ledingham and Hilary Haegens. Ledingham got right behind Imbeault on lap four and by lap six, Ledingham got underneath Imbeault and at the cross flags, Ledingham moved into the race lead. Haegens went underneath Imbeault for second on lap 11 and cleared the veteran for the runner up position with three laps remaining. Ledingham went on to collect his second win of the season.
HUMBERSTONE NOTES:. Erick Rudolph from Ransomville, NY was declared the DIRTcar Modified Champion after his MSD Box was all cleared from DIRTcar Northeast tech officials. Mike Toovey raced the Jamie Ayers Truck for the Season Championship event after damage was done to his 2v ride in the make up feature.
