@SOSSprints • @BrightonSpdwy • BRIGHTON, ON (May 16, 2015)- Brantford, Ont. driver Mitch Brown (No.10b Haldex) rocketed to the season opening win with the Southern Ontario Sprints. Brown started sixth for the 25-lap main event and quickly raced in to the third spot behind front row starters Glenn Styres (No.0 Case IH) and Paul Pekkonen (No.98 All Out Performance).
A lap 12 caution for a spun Keith Dempster (No.5 Renway Energy) erased Styres’ lead. Brown passed Pekkonen for second off the restart, but the raced was stopped two laps later when Joyceville, Ont. driver Rick Wilson (No.42w Riverside Bar & Grill) made contact with Tecumseh, MI native Dain Naida (No.77 Townline Variety) in turn four. The contact sent Wilson flipping violently in to the turn four wall. Neither driver was injured.
On the ensuing restart, Belleville, Ont. pilot Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) made his way in to third with Picton, Ont.’s Chris Jones (No.11J Jones Automotive) anchoring fifth.
As the leaders hit traffic with five laps to go, Brown had caught the race leader, Styres. Just in front of the lead group, rookie driver James Thompson (No.22 Greeves Automotive) and Bob Crawford (No.10c CarStar) spun at the top of turn one. Styres had nowhere to go, but in to the side of Thompson. Brown narrowly avoided the wreck and managed to maintain power and hold the lead.
Brown shot away from the field on two final restarts, holding off fast-moving Kokomo, IN native Parker Price-Miller (No.77p Townline Variety). Sandercock maintained third ahead of Jones and Pekkonen.
The race was slowed by caution four times and stopped for one red flag.
French Completes Hat-Trick
Bill’s Johns Comp 4 driver Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) continued his dominance and won the division’s 15-lap feature event for his third win in as many starts this season. French remains undefeated at Brighton in 2015.
French started ninth in the 10-car field, but was near perfect in the opening laps. He took his Dirty Fast Racing machine to second by lap three and set his sights on race leader Brady Greer (No.94 Greer Excavating). Greer had grown a sizeable six car-length lead, but it was no match for French, who took over the point position on lap six and lever looked back.
The only caution of the race came on the final lap but French evaded his competitors on the restart to claim the win over his teammate Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi) and Greer.
Sandercock Claims Win Two
Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) drove through the field from his 10th-place starting spot and passed Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan) on lap 21 to claim his second victory of the season at Brighton.
Potts started ninth in the 17-car field, but was inside the top-five on lap three, while Sandercock followed suit by lap nine. Potts passed polesitter Adam Turner (No.92 Mark Heating & Cooling) for the lead. Adam Nayler (No.42 Quinte West Tire) took the second spot from Turner moments later.
Sandercock then used a mid-race restart to get by Nayler for the runner-up spot. Potts held a lead of eight car-lengths with 12 laps to go, but had trouble navigating lapped traffic. Sandercock erased Potts’ advantage and used the top line to take the lead on lap 21.
A restart on lap 24 after Turner’s power plant went up in smoke allowed Potts a mulligan, but Sandercock was in no mood to relent. Sandercock led the final six laps uncontested as Potts and Nayler completed the podium.
Ramsay Wins Second
The opening race of the Larry’s Towing Triple Crown for the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks led to another thrilling battle. Leslie Mowat (No.2 Cormier’s Auto Recycling) brought the 14-car field to the green flag for the 25-lap main event.
Opening night winner Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) wasted little time getting to the front from his third starting spot, passing Mowat for the race lead on lap two. Following a restart on lap two, Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Bobcat Service) took over the second spot.
On lap 16, a caution for a big piece of debris in turn one restacked the field, with Ramsay, Anderson and Mowat holding the top three spots. The order changed when Mowat spun alone in turn three on lap 18, handing third to Wade Purchase (No.53 Performance Auto Sales and Leasing).
Anderson couldn’t muster a momentum advantage on the restart, allowing Ramsay to cruise the final seven laps to victory. Purchase, Jamie Marshall (No.55 C&L Upholstery) and Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors) completed the top-five.
