PETERBOROUGH, ON- Less than a week after earning his first top-5 finish of the 2014 season at Flamboro Speedway, Mike Nelson is eagerly anticipating his first Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup appearance at Ottawa’s Capital City Speedway.
“This season has been all about new experiences for us, and that’s exactly what Capital City is going to be”, says Nelson when asked about Round 3 of the LOSC tour. “I haven’t been out that way since my Mini Stock days, so we’ll have a lot to learn when we unload Saturday morning”
Despite his recent inexperience at the 3/8 mile oval, Nelson has been looking to a number of familiar faces for setup advice entering the 100-lap event.
“We’ve done anything we can to get some intel on where we should be going in terms of setup, including leaning on a couple of old Mini Stock buddies to help us”, smiles Nelson. “[Former CCS champion] Casey Cavanagh has been a huge asset in letting us know what to expect. If not for him, I think we might be a little lost”
The July 5th event will mark the LOSC’s first visit to Capital City since 2009, making it that much more significant for Nelson.
“This is a huge show for us”, explains Nelson. “They have some awesome fans in Ottawa. And the LOSC drivers absolutely love racing there. I’d love nothing more than to pick up a win in my first tour start there. But, ideally, a top-5 finish would be every bit as big”
Nelson jumped into the top-10 in points with his performance, and hopes for a strong follow-up this weekend.
“We have our eyes on our first championship, and we know we need consistency to be in the hunt at the end of the season”, says Nelson. “One top-5 is nice, but we need to make that a habit if we hope to have a shot at the points title”
