PETERBOROUGH, ON- After a long off-season of adjustments and preparation, Mike Nelson is ready to return to fulltime competition with the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup series.
“It feels like it’s been an eternity since we’ve put a full program together”, explained Nelson in a recent trip to his Peterborough-area shop. “I broke my arm just weeks before the 2013 race season, and it kept me out of action until August. We were fortunate enough to make it out for 2 races at the end of the summer, but we’ve been dying to put together this fulltime campaign”
Nelson has made good work of his time on the shelf, dedicating himself to finding new setup combinations for his 2014 title run.
“Our time off has really been 100% dedicated to coming back stronger than ever before”, said Nelson. “I’ve worked on getting myself in shape, I’ve read what feels like a library’s worth of set-up books and upgraded virtually every corner of this race car”
“Every facet of our program is better. I couldn’t be more proud of my team. I have to thank Joey McColm for everything he’s done for me. I’m not sure how much of this would have been possible without his guidance and support”
The former Mini Stock regular is most excited to tackle the facilities that gave been less than kind to him in the past.
“I want to hit the speedways in which I’ve struggled at before. I feel as though with our growth as a team, and our upgraded program, we could get a handle on them. On paper, places like Sauble and Capital City should give me fits. So, they’re the facilities I’m most looking forward to competing at”
In addition to upgrading his program, Nelson has welcomed a bevy of marketing partners to work with during the 2014 season. Nelson’s campaign is made possible thanks to EXTRA 90.5 FM Peterborough Sports Talk Radio, R&J Machine, Peterborough Roofing, Love’s Tires, Dohjo Muay Thai, NAPA Auto Parts of Bridgenorth, Custom Signs & Graphics and The Canadian Breast Cancer Society.
Nelson will make his debut on June 7th, when the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series kickstarts their 2014 campaign at Sauble Speedway. Gate times and ticket prices for the 100-lap event are available at www.SaubleSpeedway.ca.
