LONDON, ON- Mike Nelson and the rest of the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup tour returned to Delaware Speedway to kick off its Crown Jewel, Great Canadian Race weekend on Friday, September 19th. The sophomore battled through the 19-car field, managing a 10th place finish at the conclusion of the 100-lap A Main.
“We had a decent car tonight, but we brought the wrong gears and that definitely hurt us”, explained Nelson post-race.
“This whole season has been about small victories and forward movement”, continued the personable sophomore. “We didn’t get the top-5 finish we were looking for, but we were able to qualify 7th which is a huge improvement from where we’ve been time trialing all season”
“We’re learning on the spot, and we’re getting a lot closer every time we back out of that trailer”, said Nelson.
The Peterborough, ON-based wheelman entered the penultimate event on the LOSC schedule sitting 7th in series points, and will have one more race to reach his goal of a top-5 finish in the championship standings.
“I came into this season wanting to finish inside the top-5 in points”, says Nelson. “Our goal is still within reach. We didn’t give up a lot of ground tonight, and now we get to go back to Flamboro to settle it all”
The final event on the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup schedule rolls on Saturday, October 4th, as part of Flamboro Speedway’s annual Oktoberfest Classic.
“I’d definitely be lying if I told you that I wasn’t excited to be going back to Flamboro”, admits Nelson as he flashes a smile. “It’s our strongest speedway, for sure. And I’m confident if we can qualify as well as we did tonight, we pose a significant threat for the win”
“I’m proud of how this team has performed this season”, continues Nelson. “If we don’t finish in the top-5 in final standings, I can promise you that we’ll go down swinging. We’re headed for Flamboro intent on taking home as many points as possible”
