STAYNER, ON- 2014 Sunset Speedway Ltd. Late Model champion Dwayne Baker will enter September 27th and 28th as an early favourite to win Sunset’s premier Velocity 250 invitational. The 75-lap event will pit Baker against some of the top names in the division, with many regarding ‘The Bully’ as the driver to beat.
“It’s never bothered me much”, admits Baker when asked about the pressures of entering a marquee event as the reigning track champion.
“We’re not going to approach this race any differently”, continues Baker. “It doesn’t matter whether we’re the champions or not, we’re going to unload, work to make the car fast and go out to win the race”
The Stayner, ON veteran is eager to bounce back after a frustrating DNF at September 18th’s ‘Canadian Limited Late Model Championship’, and hopes to earn the latest in a long line of extended-distance race victories.
“There was a lot of damage to repair to the right side of our car after what happened on Thursday”, says Baker. “We hit the wall a tonne and just about had to replace the entire right side of the car. Kyle [Baker]’s been in the shop since we unloaded the car on Friday, and we’ll have it all put back together again by the time the Velocity rolls around”
“We’re hoping just to save our equipment, let these other guys burn their stuff up and make a push for the lead late in the race”, continues Baker. “It’s been working for us lately, so we’ll just keep at it”
This weekend’s ‘Velocity 250’ weekend is expected to draw champions from across the province, and Baker welcomes the added competition.
“These kind of races are what I look forward to. This is the best way of measuring how good your program is. It’s good for the track, it’s good for the sport and it’s great for the fans”, explains the veteran.
“It sounds like there will be a champion from every Limited Late Model division in Ontario represented at the Velocity, so we’ll get to see who’s the strongest”
