PETERBOROUGH, ON (July 12, 2021)- 2020’s abbreviated schedule was tough on racers everywhere, but Matt Haufe felt its wrath worse than most.
The Stittsville, Ontario speedster took to the track on less than a handful of occasions. With the Canada/U.S. border locked-down because of COVID-19, his starts were limited to the shows he could run on his native soil. Saturday, July 10, Haufe made-up for any disappointment he might have experienced last year by taking the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series win at Peterborough Speedway.
Taking the green flag from inside of the 3rd row, Haufe would need to battle the rest of the field – including his Canadian Legend Cars teammates Kevin Foisy and Parker Traves – to score the win in the season opener at Canada’s Toughest 1/3-Mile.
Foisy and Paul Pierik brought the pack to the line for the 25-lap headline dance and from the early stages, it appeared that everyone had brought their ‘A’ game to the lid-lifter at the Central Ontario speed plant. Haufe and Nicholas Ledson – a pair of former championship titleholders – would wage a torrid battle for the checkered flag and with only a single yellow flag – for a spin on the front stretch near the halfway mark – the duo would settle the issue in race traffic.
Ledson would claim the lead with a lap 18 pass in the 3rd turn, only to see Haufe’s potent No. 7 piece take it back with around a handful of laps remaining in the tilt. Ledson would get close in the closing stages, but close was as close as he’d come. Matt Haufe held-off the late race challenge to score his first win of 2021. Traves, Foisy and Pierik would complete the top five.
Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series race notes: Matt Haufe and Nick Ledson each picked-up a pair of qualifying heat wins…Ledson was wheeling the first house car from JDC Motorsports…It was tough night for Hudson Nagy, who lost an engine during one of the heat races. Chris Massey had nowhere to go and slid the oil left behind and made contact with the turn 2 wall. Neither driver was hurt, but both were finished for the night…The Ontario Legends Series will return to Peterborough Speedway Saturday, July 24th.
