TILLSONBURG, ON (July 21, 2021)- Defying the odds. We pulled of another night of great racing while some communities around the track got heavy rain. Perfect.
Speaking of odds, who would have placed a bet for us having 18 Beginners start the feature race this year? It is a hard group to get a race going with that many due to wide variances in skill and speed but as a whole, the group is learning and advancing in leaps and bounds.
This week the sprint heats went to #27 Ryan Verbern and #67 Shakierra Maracle while the second round went to #17xs Brock Pitts and #19 Grayson Huehn.
With 18 karts on the track for the feature, you know traffic would play into the results as the head was catching the tail almost before the race got up to speed. This week the win went to #17 Zayden Miller with a late race pass in traffic to overtake #19 Grayson Huehn.
Up next is the Box Stocks. With a healthy mix of racing veterans and rookies, there still is not a clear standout in this group, Multiple drivers could step up as evidenced by this weeks results. With four heats and a feature, there were no multiple winners meaning five races, five different names.
Sprint heats were won by #100 Melville Dos Santos and #87xs Skyler Evans. Middle heats went to #18 Emma Dietze and #56 Jeffery Showler. In the feature, it takes a while for the inverted field to migrate the fastest drivers up to the front and there is some passing and traffic to deal with in the process.
Two drivers who have been known to drive defensively when being overtaken finally met up when running one two in the race.
In one straight away the pair scrubbed so much speed trying to rub the other out of the way, that third place said “thank you very much” and drove around the pair to take the lead and eventual win. This weeks winner, his first in this division, #13 Race McConnell.
The Open Division is starting to see a change over of the old guard being replaced by the drivers who have come up through our system. One of those is # 48L Lancer Erskine who once again set fast qualify time and while his name will not come up in the win column this week, going home with a second in his heat and a third in the feature is not exactly a bad night.
Heat wins went to #34 Scott Chesterman and #0j John Miller. Lining up for the feature was a group with three Sprint Car drivers so you gotta know there are some drivers who can win. Despite that and several attempts by Erskine, Porter and Chesterman and Miller to take the lead, this weeks feature win, and his first at that, goes to #77e Ashton VanEvery.
Ashton was so excited that after taking the checkers momentarily released the steering wheel for a two handed fist pump and almost drove off the track. I am sure he will have lots more chances to perfect his winning ‘dance.’
Next race is July 27. We will be going from four to five for attendance per driver as Covid Restrictions continue to relax next race.
